Poilievre denounces ‘abuse’ against wife allegedly from Diagolon founder who shook his hand

 Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he is denouncing “abuse” and sexually threatening language against his wife allegedly made by Jeremy Mackenzie, the de-facto leader of a far-right group called Diagolon whose adherents have waged a social media abuse campaign against female journalists for months.

In a statement posted on Twitter Monday morning, Poilievre said he had been made aware of “disgusting comments made by Jeremy McKenzie and another man, where they discuss sexually assaulting my wife.”

He called the men “odious” and “losers,” and added he has reported the comments to police.

In the video, a social media account of “Jeremy Mackenzie” can be seen lighting up as the speaker before a man can be heard talking about Anaida Poilievre as he and co-hosts debate her ethnic background, before he goes on to say: “let’s rape her.”

“It’s not really a sex thing, we just want to show people we can do things to you if we want to,” he adds.

Global News attempted to contact Mackenzie on Monday about the threats allegedly made against Anaida Poilievre. No response has yet been received.

The Canadian Press reported Monday afternoon that in an interview with Mackenzie, he said he was drinking when he made the comments and nobody meant any harm by it.

Poilievre said in his statement that he had not known about Diagolon until “about a month ago.”

Global News sent a list of questions to Poilievre’s Conservative leadership campaign back in July, shortly after he attended an anti-COVID public health measures march with a man called James Topp, who had previously appeared on an episode of Mackenzie’s podcast in January in which the latter described wanting to “bring down the government.”

Co-hosts of that episode also described wanting “to assemble the gallows on f—ing Parliament.”

When asked if Poilievre was concerned that supporting figures like Topp who have appeared on Mackenzie’s podcast could be interpreted as support for far-right views, and whether he would denounce comments by Mackenzie’s co-host about wanting to see a gallows on Parliament Hill, Poilievre attacked Global News.

His campaign posted a 238-word statement accusing Global News of being “unprofessional” and attempting to set “disingenuous traps.”

“Your tactic seems to be to demand Mr. Poilievre answer for all the words and deeds of not just everyone he has ever met, but also everyone they have ever met,” his campaign said. “Each of those people is individually responsible for their own words and deeds.”

Poilievre faced questions last month after a photo circulated online showing him shaking Mackenzie’s hand at a campaign event in Nova Scotia. A spokesperson for Poilievre said on Aug. 20 that he has “shaken hands with literally tens of thousands of people at public rallies.”

“It is impossible to do a background check on every single person who attends my events,” Poilievre’s campaign team said in response to Global News’ request for comment on Aug. 20.

“I didn’t and don’t know or recognize this particular individual.”

Over recent weeks, an ongoing torrent of abuse, threats and hate against the journalist in question and other female Canadian journalists covering the far-right has continued to escalate, including from supporters of Diagolon and Mackenzie himself.

“You deserve worse and with the trajectory you’re on, you’ll get it,” Mackenzie tweeted on Aug. 12 about the onslaught of threats against female journalists covering the far-right.

He also urged his thousands of followers: “Hate them as hard as you can.”

His account was suspended shortly after and remains so.

Diagolon took on additional prominence during the convoy blockades earlier this year, particularly the blockade in Coutts, Alta. RCMP said at the time they had become aware of a small, organized group that had “a willingness to use force against the police.”

In a subsequent raid, Mounties uncovered 13 long guns, handguns, a machete, a large quantity of ammunition and body armour. They also found two tactical vests — adorned with what Canadian Anti-Hate Network researchers believe were Diagolon patches.

Mackenzie has denied the patches are affiliated with his group.

Global News obtained the City of Ottawa permit application for the march Poilievre attended alongside Topp last month. Listed as the “primary event contact” on the form was Stephanie McEvoy, a woman who described herself online in social media posts as “pro-ProudBoy.”

The Proud Boys are a listed terrorist entity in Canada.

Poilievre’s campaign did not respond to questions at the time asking if he knew McEvoy was involved.

Topp’s lawyer has served Global News with a complaint about a previous Global News article and indicated that any statement suggesting Topp is a “a member of the far-right” or an “extremist” is false and defamatory.

James Topp serves Global News with notice of libel over white supremacy claims

Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) veteran James Topp has retained a lawyer and has served Global News as well as its parent company Corus Entertainment Inc. with a notice of libel for falsely painting him as a white supremacist. 

Topp made headlines when he marched across Canada to protest Covid-19 mandates earlier this year. He is currently facing a court martial after refusing to comply with the CAF’s mandatory vaccination policy. 

The notice filed by lawyer David Elmaleh names journalist Rachel Gilmore and her employers. It references an Aug. 18 article titled ‘Good PR’: Why anti-hate experts are urging politicians to step up vetting practices which covers a meeting between Topp and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. 

“The defamatory article, inclusive of the URL tag, referred to Mr. Topp as a white supremacist, among other things,” the notice reads.

Global News has since changed the URL of the article but originally it included the words “james topp white supremacists far right.” 

“(Defendants published this) without providing any evidence supporting their statements,” writes Elmaleh. 

“(Those named) also included various ‘tags’ on the defamatory article, further implying that Mr. Topp is a white supremacist, extremist and member of the far right.” 

An editor’s note on the article currently states that the URL was revised “to omit a reference to ‘white supremacist’ to avoid any misunderstanding that persons named in the URL are associated with that label.” 

“Take notice that Mr. Topp intends to plead that the defamatory words were made deliberately, irresponsibly and with malice,” the claim continues. 

“The intended defendants knew that the defamatory words, and the innuendo arising from them, were false, yet expressed them in any event in order to generate headlines, expand the reach of the defamatory article and garner interest from as many members of the public as possible.” 

 

Topp is alleging that the false claims “lowered his reputation, and has caused and will continue to cause reputational and financial harm, along with emotional pain and suffering.” 

The notice calls on the named parties to immediately publish an apology on all platforms and warns that Topp will seek damages in future proceedings. 

True North reached out to Gilmore and Global News to give them an opportunity to comment on the libel allegations but did not receive a response by the time this article was published.

Lament for our post-national state

From his earliest revelations about wanting to transform this country into a post-national state, PM Justin Trudeau and his enablers have been on a mission to hollow out the idea of Canada. There is to be no core identity, no proud history, no mainstream traditions, no sense of belonging. Seven years into his mission, the country marks its 155th birthday with chaotic and politically charged gatherings across the land that, at best, reflect a shaken sense of nationhood; but, perhaps more accurately, they signal Canadians’ social contract has been forsook. 

Whether it’s the PM’s response to the truckers or the Liberals embrace of the World Economic Forum’s agenda, Canadian editorialists and political pundits now openly debate the damage being done by the Trudeau Government’s constant undermining of the Canadian Constitution and Charter of Rights, its destabilization of the country’s resource economy, and the rewriting of Canada’s history to shame our cultural and societal legacies. 

Andrew Coyne’s commentary this week in the Globe and Mail identifies “the vacuum at the centre of Canadian politics” with politicians degrading and disregarding “obligations to common sense, or the ordinary routines of democratic politics, or the rule of law.” Independent journalist Matt Gurney suggests our lack of political leadership has Canadians settling for mediocrity. Numerous columnists including William Gairdner are documenting how the government has morphed from soft socialism to soft totalitarianism. Some like Rupa Subramanya and Warren Kinsella often write on the perverse nature of Trudeau’s authoritarian kleptocracy.

So, this day’s scenes of unrest in the Nation’s Capital and its various cross-country protests against the celebration of “Canada” speak directly to the crisis of our nationhood’s legitimacy, a crisis that is continuously being stoked by the Trudeau Government. Trudeau’s ceaseless use of wedge politics has effectively eroded Canadians’ trust and faith in one another. The PM and his operatives do not let a single opportunity pass by without virtue signaling a division between Canadians. Case in point is most recently when Trudeau and his senior ministers infused the U.S. political maelstrom on abortion into Canada’s public debate, purposefully to 1) embolden his progressive base, and 2) highlight the moral and political divides on this contentious issue.

In the Financial Post, Joe Oliver offers his Lament for a misgoverned nation: “As they prepare to celebrate their country’s 155th birthday, Canadians are suffering at the hands of a divisive, incompetent government that has undermined prosperity, freedom, parliamentary responsibility, the independence of institutions, national unity and our country’s global standing.”

From the deluge of hapless news coming out of Ottawa these days, it seems that the very fabric of our nation is threadbare. Consider how these situations will end.

Canadians are being told there has been no impropriety or “undue influence” exercised with the latest scandalous news that RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki “made a promise” to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and the Prime Minister’s Office to use the mass murders in Nova Scotia to help pass the Liberals gun control law. Senior Mounties have exposed the political power play. Yet, the same people who caused the obstruction of justice scandals involving Jody-Wilson-Raybould and SNC Lavalin, Vice-Admiral Mark Norman, and the WE Charity payouts, claim the senior Mounties are fabricating their story. 

Canadians are now camping out for days in front of federal government offices with hopes that they might get their passports in time for their summer and fall vacations. To address the snake-like lineups moving at glacier speed, PM Trudeau announced a 13-member ministerial taskforce committee that (in his words) “will help guide the work of the government to better meet the changing needs of Canadians and continue to provide them with the high-quality services they need and deserve.” The committee will begin meeting in early July.  

Inflation last month hit almost 7.7 per cent, the highest it has been in 40 years when the current PM’s father was PM. Unfortunately, the Trudeau Liberals now know nothing more of how to handle runaway inflation as the Trudeau Liberals did then. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s latest budget included more fiscal stimulus, more debt, more regulation and more taxes. Recall, she appeared beside the Bank of Canada governor to pronounce inflation was “transitory.” Recently, when asked about government actions to tamper inflationary pressures, she claimed the government has “done enough already.” In another interview when asked about the frustrations Canadians are experiencing with rising prices, Freeland offered “it is okay to be mad.” 

Gas pump prices in Canada continue to climb causing increasing strain for daily commuters, suburban families, and commercial drivers. Though Canadians are being told this is a global pressure in part caused by Russia, the fact is our country has the highest and highest-rising prices of any oil-developing nation. In comparing pump prices in Niagara Falls, Ontario to Niagara Falls, New York the gap has widened to more than 33 per cent more per litre. (News Thursday from an internal Department of Environment report tells us that new regulatory taxes on gas to be imposed July 1, 2023 will have a direct impact on prices by as much as 36 cents per litre.) The Americans are considering tax relief for motorists; any type of gas tax relief is something the Trudeau government has repeatedly rejected. 

More horrors were reported from Ukraine this week when missiles hit residential buildings in Kiev and one missile struck a shopping centre, killing 16 and injuring over 40. While this news shook the world, PM Trudeau was hamming it up at the G7 meetings in Germany, mocking Vladimir Putin and photos of him bare-chested horseback riding. The Canadian PM had nothing more to offer his colleagues at the NATO summit. In the past couple of years, it is evident Canada has been marginalized in international affairs – left out of AUKUS, no mention with the QUAD Alliance, and our diplomats are MIA in any discussions of defending Ukraine. Still our Trudeau Government boasts its hashtag diplomacy: #IStandWithUkraine. 

Finally, consider the news that Canada Day in Winnipeg has been replaced with “New Day” celebrations, a solemn statement to support Indigenous rights and to stand with those who hold grievances against Canada as a nation. Queen’s University professor Bruce Pardy makes this observation in an Epoch Times article, “The cancellation and renaming of Canada Day… reflects a kind of cultural self-hate that has gripped the body politic in Canada.” 

Professor Pardy homes in on the sobering significance, “Our institutions have embraced the premises of critical theory, an anti-Western ideology that insists that Canada and other Western nations are fundamentally unjust, systemically racist, oppressive, and destructive… the most serious threat to Canada may be its conditioned disgust with its own history and traditions.”

So, returning to Joe Oliver’s column and his use of the adjective “misgoverned”. Oliver assumes the Trudeau Government is rudderless and unfocused when, in fact, there is plenty of evidence what is at play here is more than incompetence. On this Canada Day, Parliament Hill is off-limits. The PM is insulting “those people” again, purposefully dividing and erasing the idea that we should celebrate our country. 

Oh Canada, this is lamentable.

Murray firmly holds reins but Loney moves up in Winnipeg mayoral race, new poll suggests

Shaun Loney is making late-race gains but Glen Murray remains well ahead of the field in the home stretch of the campaign to become Winnipeg's next mayor, a new Probe Research poll suggests.

Loney has 14 per cent support from decided voters in the Probe survey, conducted for the Winnipeg Free Press and CTV and released Monday.

That's up from six per cent in a previous survey, which came out at the end of July. It's the biggest jump of any candidate in the online poll of 600 Winnipeg adults, done from Sept. 8-18.

Murray, who was Winnipeg's mayor from 1998 to 2004, remains the preferred candidate among those polled, even if that support was lower than in the July poll. It was 44 per cent in July and is at 40 per cent in the new poll.

Scott Gillingham, who has served for two terms as a city councillor, continues to hold second spot in the race at 15 per cent support, a dip from 16 per cent in July.

"The big story, and we don't want to lose sight of this, is Glen Murray's lead. He has a really significant lead over all of the other candidates," said Mary Agnes Welch, a partner at Winnipeg-based Probe Research.

"That's kind of like the don't-miss-the-forest-for-the-trees story."

But underneath that, in the trees, is the jockeying for second place, to determine who is Murray's main challenger, she said.

Coun. Kevin Klein, who only entered the mayoral race in late July and was not considered in the survey from that month, sits in fourth place with 10 per cent support.

Klein's level of backing is "not quite as well as we might have thought a councillor would do, but he's still in the race," Welch said.

Robert-Falcon Ouellette, who was running third in the July report, dropped to fifth spot as he lost six percentage points.

Jenny Motkaluk saw her support cut in half, from eight per cent in July to just four now.

The remaining six candidates are all polling in the low single digits.

Motkaluk finished second to Brian Bowman in the 2018 mayoral race with 38 per cent of the popular vote. Bowman, who has been Winnipeg's mayor since 2014, is not seeking re-election.

'Even more undecided now'

Despite the current polling numbers, the shape of the race remains somewhat uncertain.

Nearly four in 10 Winnipeggers do not yet know who they will vote for and even among those with a preferred candidate at the moment, fewer than half are very certain of that choice.

"They're even more undecided now than they were earlier in the summer," Welch said. "They might waver; they're not 100 per cent locked in.

"So even though Glen Murray has this crazy big lead, I think there is sort of an opportunity still for this race to develop and kind of a different story to be written."

Nearly four in 10 voters in Winnipeg are undecided (39 per cent), with another eight per cent indicating they do not plan to vote at all on Oct. 26. (Probe Research Inc.)

Welch blames a glut of promises for creating confusion among voters, with no single, galvanizing issue taking the spotlight.

"There's been a lot of announcements [but] there hasn't been one overarching narrative," she said.

Winnipeg's election is Oct. 26.

With a sample size of 600, the results have a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of being representative of the entire adult population of Winnipeg.

The sample consists of 236 Winnipeggers randomly recruited via live-agent operator, 208 Winnipeggers randomly recruited via interactive voice response and 156 members of Probe Research's online panel. All respondents completed the survey on an online platform.

Minor statistical weighting was applied to the sample to ensure age and gender characteristics properly reflect the city's population.

Winnipeg mayoral candidate Glen Murray denies allegations he physically harassed a former employee of the Pembina Institute during his one-year tenure as head of the environmental organization — and that employee is standing by his claims.

The allegations were first reported earlier Thursday in a CBC News investigation into the 370 days Murray spent in 2017-18 in what he called his "dream job" as executive director of the Calgary-based clean energy think-tank. 

The investigation also revealed allegations Murray used sexual innuendo in the workplace and drank to excess at some organization functions before being forced out following complaints about his management.

Duncan Kenyon, who served as the Pembina Institute's oil and gas director and as its Alberta director, alleged Murray rubbed up against him, pelvis to buttocks, during a company social function in Banff, Alta., in March 2018. 

Kenyon said he's not surprised his former boss would deny his allegations because, while he told his supervisor and several colleagues about the alleged incident, there was no documentation of what Kenyon says happened.

He also questioned whether Murray would know what happened that night, given Murray's alleged level of intoxication at the time.

Murray said since being approached with questions about his time at the Pembina Institute, he's been "going over in my mind every interaction, every conversation and every opportunity where something could have happened." 

"I'm not perfect. Who is?" Murray said. "But I am certain the reported sexual harassment from today is not true."

Murray said while his time at the Pembina Institute was a time of ambition and hard work, it was also a time of great change in his personal life.

"And it is clear that I allowed that pressure to spill over into my work life. I am sorry for this and I take responsibility," he said.

Murray said when it became clear his leadership style wasn't a good fit for the culture of the organization, he and the Pembina Institute's leadership team together "came to the realization that parting was the best way forward."

Documentation obtained by CBC News shows Murray was presented with a termination notice and was given the option to resign instead, which he did on Sept. 9, 2018.

Murray did not take questions from reporters following his remarks.

The CBC News investigation into Murray's time at the Pembina Institute also prompted several of his campaign rivals to call on him to withdraw from the race.

Mayoral rivals call for Murray's withdrawal

"I would like to see all people running for mayor, for the sake of the city, to come out and ask Glen to withdraw," Kevin Klein said.

"I think that that's the appropriate thing to do here. They're serious, serious allegations."

Rana Bokhari later followed Klein's lead, saying Murray needs to "sincerely apologize to the people he has wronged" and bow out of the race.

"How many passes do we give him? Is this who we want to represent Winnipeg?" Bokhari wrote in an emailed statement.

Scott Gillingham said what Murray and his campaign do now is up to them. Gillingham also said he would worry about how Murray might treat city staff as mayor, given the allegations about his management at the Pembina Institute.

"There's a pattern that seems to follow him from city to city to city. The article presents a picture of chaos and instability," Gillingham said.

Shaun Loney called the allegations against Murray concerning, but stopped short of asking him to withdraw — although Loney said he thinks the details revealed about the front-runner may improve his own chances in the race.

"When you're running for office, you bring your past with you. And I'm bringing my past here with me today," Loney said.

"For me, I'm just glad that I've conducted myself in such a fashion that my co-workers would stand here with me today."

      Apparently everybody wanted to play dumb about my concerns and
allegations so that Humpty Dumpty Martin's minority government would not
fall and they could party hardy while the Queen was in Canada. As you all
know months ago, I began faxing, emailing and calling the eight other Lt.
Governors I had yet to cross paths with. I fully informed them of my
indignation towards the Governor General Clarkson and two of her other
Maritime Lieutenants Roberts and Chaisson before the latest wave of bad
acting Yankees invaded my home in the USA without warrants or due process if
law.

      I made certain all of the provincial Attorney Generals and Premiers
can never deny the fact that I tried to make them well aware of my concerns
and allegations in order to make everybody should sit up and pay attention.
Not one person from any of your offices ever responded in any fashion at
all. You can be certain that I expected the deliberate ignorance. It is one
of the oldest tricks in the book that lawyers employ in order to play their
wicked game of see no evil, hear no evil speak no evil. I knew it would
happen particularly after Nova Scotia's Conflict of Interest Commissioner
Merlin Nunn had blocked my emails before I had contacted you. I have no
doubt it helped to relieve him of his ethical dilemma before the NS NDP
decided what to do about their chance to unseat the Conservatives. I have no
doubt whatsoever many lawyers in Canada were praying that the Suffolk County
District Attorney would have me back in the loony bin by April 28th and that
all your troubles would go away. I opted to let you all have your way and
did not bother you anymore until the Queen had left our shores and
Parliament quit for the summer. Now it is my turn to have some fun and raise
a little Political Hell.

      While the Queen, Clarkson and Martin where all having a grand old time
on the Canadian dime my little Clan went through living hell down here.
Trust me, lawyers need to learn some new tricks. Ignorance is no excuse to
the law or me. Making some Canadian Attorney Generals and their political
buddies show me their arses is child's play to me after all that I have
experienced in the last few years. If you doubt me ask Michael J. Bryant and
Yvon Marcoux why I am so pissed at their bosses and the DHS. Then check my
work for yourself. If the tag team of John Ashcroft and Tom Ridge could not
intimidate me, believe me you people don't have a prayer. Both of those
dudes have quit their jobs but I am still standing and squaring off against
their replacements now. If it were not for all the decent folks I know, the
snotty ones like you would make me feel ashamed to be a Canadian. There is
no shortage of lawyers. It is just that ethical ones that are rare birds,
that's all. You must know how easily the Canadian people can replace you
with other lawyers if it becomes widely known how willing you are to ignore
crime if it means some fancy dude may be compelled to suffer for his own
wrongs.

      The justice system is supposed to be self-policing. It should clean up
its own act rather than trying to maintain a false mask of integrity for
lawyers that are obviously criminals. It is way beyond my understanding why
you people would choose to support the likes of Paul Martin, Adrienne
Clarkson, T. Alex Hickman and Billy Matthews if you are not all as crooked
as hell as well. The deliberate ignorance and double-talk employed by the
wealthy few to dodge simple truths is absolutely offensive to ordinary
people blessed with the rare attribute called common sense. Not all folks
are like sheep. Paul Martin's latest tricks make for a very fine example of
truly how bad things are. Even amidst wholesale scandals breaking out hell,
west and crooked everywhere lawyers and politicians just close ranks and
stand together as thick as the thieves they are. I stress tested the ethics
of the ladies of the Bloc Quebecois and the Gomery Inquiry immediately after
Martin's carefully orchestrated little circus in Parliament on May 19th was
a matter of history. Lets just say I was not surprised to not hear one peep
in response from anyone other than to get a call from an unidentified and
very nervous but cocky Yankee lawyer claiming that Tony Blair was mad at me.

      Pursuant to my phone calls, emails and faxes please find enclosed as
promised exactly the same hard copy of what I sent to the Canadian
Ambassadors Allan Rock and Franky Boy McKenna and a couple of nasty FBI
agents on May 12th just before an interesting event in front of our home in
Milton. I have also included a copy of four letters I have received in
response since then that you may find interesting to say the least. I also
sent you a copy of a letter sent to a lady Ms. Condolezza Rice whom our
former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney considers to be the most powerful woman
in the world. The CD of the copy of police surveillance tape # 139 is served
upon all the above named Attorney Generals as officers of the court in order
that it may be properly investigated. I will not bother you with the details
of what I am sending to you byway of the certified US Mail because I will be
serving identical material to many other Canadian Authorities in hand and
tell them I gave this stuff to you first and enclose a copy of this letter.
All that is important to me right now is that I secure proof that this mail
was sent before I make my way back home to the Maritimes.

      However I will say I am also enclosing a great deal more material than
what Allan Rock had received in the UN. Some of it is in fact the same
material the two maritime lawyers, Rob Moore and Franky Boy McKenna in

the public service to call in the police."

      Everybody knows that in order to protect the rights and interests of

A F F I D A V I T

I, Stephen J. May, of the City of St. John's, in the Province of
Newfoundland and Labrador, Barrister and Solicitor, make oath and say
as follows:

THAT I am a Partner in the St. John's office of PATTERSON PALMER
solicitors for William Matthews, the Member of Parliament for
Random-Burin-St. George's in the Parliament of Canada.

THAT Mr. Matthews originally retained Mr. Edward Roberts, Q.C. on or
about 30 April 2002 after Mr. Byron Prior, the Defendant/Plaintiff by
Counterclaim, had made allegations against Mr. Matthews in a
publication called "My Inheritance - The truth - Not Fiction: A Town
with a Secret". In that publication, the allegation was made that Mr.
Matthews had had sex with a girl who had been prostituted by her
mother. That girl was alleged to have been Mr. Prior's sister.

THAT upon being retained, Mr. Edward Roberts wrote a letter to Mr.
Prior. That letter to Mr. Prior is attached as Exhibit "1" to my
Affidavit.

THAT subsequent to Mr. Roberts' letter to Mr. Prior, Mr. Roberts
received a 1 May 2002 e-mail from Mr. Prior. That e-mail is attached
as Exhibit "2".

THAT subsequent to Mr. Roberts receipt of the e-mail, Mr. Prior swore
an Affidavit acknowledging that what had been said in that publication
was false. That Affidavit is attached as Exhibit "3" to my Affidavit.
Following Mr. Roberts' receipt of that Affidavit, Mr. Matthews advised
that he was satisfied not to pursue the matter any further and our
firm closed our file.

THAT on or about 25 October 2004, I was retained by Mr. Matthews
following his gaining knowledge that a web site, made a series of
allegations against him relating to my having sex with a girl of
approximately 12 years old through to an approximate age of 15 years
old. It also accused him of being a father of one of her children and
accused him of having raped that girl. Upon checking the web site I
saw that Byron Prior, the Defendant, had been identified as the author
of the material on the site.

THAT Mr. Matthews instructed me to write Mr. Prior, to remind him of
the fact that the allegations had been admitted to being false through
a 16 May 2002 Affidavit to advise him of Mr. Matthews' intentions to
commence legal proceedings if the comments were not removed from the
web site. A copy of my letter to Mr. Prior is attached as Exhibit "4"
to this Affidavit.

THAT I attach as Exhibit "5" a transcript from a 5 November 2004
voicemail left by David Amos, identified in the voicemail as a friend
of Mr. Prior.

THAT I attach as Exhibit "6" a portion of a 6 November 2004 e-mail
from Mr. Amos.

THAT until I received his voicemail and e-mail, I had never heard of Mr.
Amos.

THAT Mr. Amos has continued to send me e-mail since his 5 November
e-mail. Including his 6 November 2004 e-mail, I have received a total
of 15 e-mails as of 23 January 2005. All do not address Mr. Matthews'

THAT I attach as Exhibit "9" a copy of a 22 November 2004 letter
addressed to me from Edward Roberts, the Lieutenant Governor of
Newfoundland and Labrador covering a 2 September 2004 letter from Mr.
Amos addressed to John Crosbie, Edward Roberts, in his capacity as
Lieutenant Governor, Danny Williams, in his capacity as Premier of
Newfoundland and Labrador, and Brian F. Furey, President of the Law
Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. I requested a copy of this
letter from Government House after asking Mr. Roberts if he had
received any correspondence from Mr. Amos during his previous
representation of Mr. Matthews. He advised me that he received a
letter since becoming Lieutenant Governor, portions of which involved
his representation of Mr. Matthews. Mr. Roberts' letter also covered
his reply to Mr. Amos.

THAT I attach as Exhibit "10" an e-mail from Mr. Amos received on
Sunday, 23 January 2005.

the candidates' debate held June 18.

As I recall David Amos came last of four candidates in the election.
The winner got 14,997 votes, while Amos got 358.

taken by reporter Erin Hatfield during the debate. I couldn't find the photo
that ran, but this one is very similar.

Raising a Little Hell- Lively Debate Provokes Crowd

"If you don't like what you got, why don't you change it? If your
world is all screwed up, rearrange it."

The 1979 Trooper song Raise a Little Hell blared on the speakers at
the 8th Hussars Sports Center Friday evening as people filed in to
watch the Fundy candidates debate the issues. It was an accurate, if
unofficial, theme song for the debate.

The crowd of over 200 spectators was dwarfed by the huge arena, but as
they chose their seats, it was clear the battle lines were drawn.
Supporters of Conservative candidate Rob Moore naturally took the blue
chairs on the right of the rink floor while John Herron's Liberalswent
left. There were splashes of orange, supporters of NDP Pat Hanratty,
mixed throughout. Perhaps the loudest applause came from a row towards
the back, where supporters of independent candidate David Amos sat.

The debate was moderated by Leo Melanson of CJCW Radio and was
organized by the Sussex Valley Jaycees. Candidates wereasked a barrage
of questions bypanelists Gisele McKnight of the Kings County Record
and Lisa Spencer of CJCW.

Staying true to party platforms for the most part, candidates
responded to questions about the gun registry, same sex marriage, the
exodus of young people from the Maritimes and regulated gas prices.
Herron and Moore were clear competitors,constantly challenging each
other on their answers and criticizing eachothers' party leaders.
Hanratty flew under the radar, giving short, concise responses to the
questions while Amos provided some food for thought and a bit of comic
relief with quirky answers. "I was raised with a gun," Amos said in
response to the question of thenational gun registry. "Nobody's
getting mine and I'm not paying 10 cents for it."

Herron, a Progressive Conservative MP turned Liberal, veered from his
party'splatform with regard to gun control. "It was ill advised but
well intentioned," Herron said. "No matter what side of the house I am
on, I'm voting against it." Pat Hanratty agreed there were better
places for the gun registry dollars to be spent.Recreational hunters
shouldn't have been penalized by this gun registry," he said.

The gun registry issues provoked the tempers of Herron and Moore. At
one point Herron got out of his seat and threw a piece of paper in
front of Moore. "Read that," Herron said to Moore, referring to the
voting record of Conservative Party leader Steven Harper. According to
Herron, Harper voted in favour of the registry on the first and second
readings of the bill in 1995. "He voted against it when it counted, at
final count," Moore said. "We needa government with courage to
register sex offenders rather than register the property of law
abiding citizens."

The crowd was vocal throughout the evening, with white haired men and
women heckling from the Conservative side. "Shut up John," one woman
yelled. "How can you talk about selling out?" a man yelled whenHerron
spoke about his fear that the Conservatives are selling farmers out.

Although the Liberal side was less vocal, Kings East MLA Leroy
Armstrong weighed in at one point. "You're out of touch," Armstrong
yelled to Moore from the crowd when the debate turned to the cost of
post-secondary education. Later in the evening Amos challenged
Armstrong to a public debate of their own. "Talk is cheap. Any time,
anyplace," Armstrong responded.

As the crowd made its way out of the building following the debate,
candidates worked the room. They shook hands with well-wishers and
fielded questions from spectators-all part of the decision-making
process for the June 28 vote.

David Amos Isn't Campaigning For Your Vote, But….

FUNDY—He has a pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket, a chain on his
wallet, a beard at least a foot long, 60 motorcycles and a cell phone
that rings to the tune of "Yankee Doodle."

Meet the latest addition to the Fundy ballot—David Amos.

The independent candidate lives in Milton, Massachusetts with his wife
and two children, but his place of residence does not stop him from
running for office in Canada.

One has only to be at least 18, a Canadian citizen and not be in jail
to meet Elections Canada requirements.

When it came time to launch his political crusade, Amos chose his
favourite place to do so—Fundy.

Amos, 52, is running for political office because of his
dissatisfaction with politicians.

"I've become aware of much corruption involving our two countries," he
said. "The only way to fix corruption is in the political forum."

The journey that eventually led Amos to politics began in Sussex in
1987. He woke up one morning disillusioned with life and decided he
needed to change his life.

"I lost my faith in mankind," he said. "People go through that
sometimes in midlife."

So Amos, who'd lived in Sussex since 1973, closed his Four Corners
motorcycle shop, paid his bills and hit the road with Annie, his 1952
Panhead motorcycle.

"Annie and I rode around for awhile (three years, to be exact)
experiencing the milk of human kindness," he said. "This is how you
renew your faith in mankind – you help anyone you can, you never ask
for anything, but you take what they offer."

For those three years, they offered food, a place to sleep, odd jobs
and conversation all over North America.

Since he and Annie stopped wandering, he has married, fathered a son
and a daughter and become a house-husband – Mr. Mom, as he calls
himself.

He also describes himself in far more colourful terms—a motorcyclist
rather than a biker, a "fun-loving, free-thinking, pig-headed
individual," a "pissed-off Maritimer" rather than an activist, a proud
Canadian and a "wild colonial boy."

Ironically, the man who is running for office has never voted in his life.

"But I have no right to criticize unless I offer my name," he said.
"It's alright to bitch in the kitchen, but can you walk the walk?"

Amos has no intention of actively campaigning.

"I didn't appreciate it when they (politicians) pounded on my door
interrupting my dinner," he said. "If people are interested, they can
call me. I'm not going to drive my opinions down their throats."

And he has no campaign budget, nor does he want one.

"I won't take any donations," he said. "Just try to give me some. It's
not about money. It goes against what I'm fighting about."

What he's fighting for is the discussion of issues – tainted blood,
the exploitation of the Maritimes' gas and oil reserves and NAFTA, to
name a few.

"The political issues in the Maritimes involve the three Fs – fishing,
farming and forestry, but they forget foreign issues," he said. "I'm
death on NAFTA, the back room deals and free trade. I say chuck it
(NAFTA) out the window.

NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement which allows an
easier flow of goods between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Amos disagrees with the idea that a vote for him is a wasted vote.

"There are no wasted votes," he said. "I want people like me,
especially young people, to pay attention and exercise their right.
Don't necessarily vote for me, but vote."

Although…if you're going to vote anyway, Amos would be happy to have
your X by his name.

"I want people to go into that voting booth, see my name, laugh and
say, 'what the hell.'"

I am not responding to Dave Amos' emails, but I believe I have heard
he has some "issues".  I have no sense of what his involvement is with
the organization or why he is threatening law suits (my receptionist
just intercepted a call and he told her he didn't want to leave a
message and to just tell her that he would "see me in court").

Does anyone have any idea what to do about this guy?   Should we just
ignore him?

COALITION CALLS ON LEADERS TO ACT IMMEDIATELY TO STOP OIL AND GAS
EXPLORATION IN GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE
For Immediate Release - October 4, 2010
PICTOU, NS – Today’s decision by the Canada Newfoundland and Labrador
Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) to allow seismic blasting in the
Gulf of St. Lawrence was met with shock and concern by a coalition
calling for a moratorium on oil and gas development in the Gulf of St.
Lawrence. The coalition - made of aboriginal, fishing, and
environmental organizations - is calling on municipal, provincial,
federal, and aboriginal leaders to act swiftly to halt the testing.

“With this decision, the CNLOPB has approved an activity that could
damage this entire precious ecosystem,” according to Mary Gorman of
the Save Our Seas and Shores, “We want this decision reversed
immediately, and action taken to allow jurisdictions bordering on the
Gulf to have a say in its future.”

“Seismic testing could start in the next 48 hours, potentially
damaging marine mammals like blue whales, and disrupting fish and
fisheries. This approval has given oil and gas as a toehold in the
Gulf that could lead to full scale drilling,” according to Danielle
Giroux of the. “Fishermen I work for need more say over protecting the
Gulf. We want the CNLOPB’s decision reversed immediately.”

“An oil spill in the Gulf of St. Lawrence would impact fish stocks and
coastal communities in Quebec, PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and
Newfoundland. Moreover, the national importance of this ecosystem must
be upheld.”  says Gretchen Fitzgerald, of the Sierra Club Canada. “
Federal laws to protect endangered species and fish habitat recognize
the importance of protecting our shared biodiversity and resources.
This decision is not reflecting this shared responsibility or concerns
expressed by groups around the Gulf.”

Bennett was assisting Cape Bretoners opposing a coal-fired power plant
at Point Aconi in Nova Scotia when he first caught the attention
Elizabeth May, then Sierra Club Canada’s executive-director. May liked
his approach – among other things, he’d brought his wife and two
daughters to a potluck supper meeting and assured the group he was
there to hear from them, not issue orders. Several years – and, after
an interview on a train ride from Toronto to Ottawa -- later, she
hired him as the Club’s director of atmosphere and energy.

He managed environmental education campaigns; was the Club’s main
spokesperson on air, energy, automotive and climate change issues;
prepared fundraising proposals; and wrote position papers and research
articles.

During this period, Bennett also headed the Climate Action Network, an
association of up to 100 environmental, health, labour and faith
organizations from 10 provinces and two territories. There, he was
also the chief spokesperson, wrote releases and papers, and acted as
liaison with government officials, ministers, MPs, their staffs and
industry leaders. He did similar work with a successor organization,
ClimateforChange.ca.

It was then that he was involved in preparing reporters for the
federal Conservative government’s climate plan. “I figured we had to
talk to the media. We had to meet the government head-on, and say what
they were doing was going backward. We were very effective.”

The work “succeeded to the extent that when Stéphane Dion became
Liberal leader, the party thought the climate and environment were
where they should campaign. They were right; they just did it very
badly.”

A spirit of collaboration

Most recently, Bennett was communications director for the Green Party
of Canada, including the 2008 campaign in which the Greens, led by
May, won nearly a million votes and was the only party to increase its
total.

“It’s a well-rounded background, ranging from activist events to
negotiating in the halls of power,” Bennett says. “My knowledge covers
the spectrum of issues across the country.”

Bennett’s experience has demonstrated the importance of collaborating
with other groups and including as many people as possible, and their
ideas, in whatever work must be done. That was especially obvious in
the creation of the Green Budget Coalition, which analyzed federal
budgets in terms of their impact on environmental concerns.
