Prime Minister Justin Trudeau points to Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer while walking with the crowd during the Tintamarre in celebration of the National Acadian Day and World Acadian Congress in Dieppe, N.B., on Aug. 15, 2019. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is asking Liberal MPs on the House of Commons ethics committee to vote to continue the investigation into the SNC-Lavalin affair, after a scathing report found that the prime minister broke ethics law.

Hôtesses d'Hilaire lead singer Serge Brideau amended song lyrics during a National Acadian Day performance in Dieppe to call out Premier Blaine Higgs for being unilingual. (Radio-Canada)
The president of the Acadian Society of New Brunswick says a nationally televised concert wasn't the appropriate place to call out the province's premier for being unilingual.
The singer for Acadian folk-rock band Hôtesses d'Hilaire incorporated the criticism of Premier Blaine Higgs into a National Acadian Day performance Thursday evening.
Serge Brideau amended the lyrics of the group's song Regarde-moi to say "Look at me with the unilingual premier and his boss Irving."
Brideau said "Look at L'Acadie" as he raised his fists and flashed the middle finger. The crowd of thousands at the concert in Dieppe cheered.
Robert Melanson, president of the Acadian Society of New Brunswick, didn't condemn the statement but said the event wasn't the right place to make it.
"I think Aug. 15 is a day to put aside our differences and to reunite everybody together and to celebrate," Melanson said. "And to celebrate, that means celebrating with everyone, anglophones included."
Robert Melanson, president of the Acadian Society of New Brunswick, says the Acadian Day celebration wasn't the place to criticize the premier's language skills. (Jean-Philippe Hughes/Radio-Canada)
Brideau disagreed, telling Radio-Canada on Thursday that the show was the ideal venue.
The concert broadcast on Radio-Canada coincided with the World Acadian Congress, which has drawn thousands to the greater Moncton area.
Higgs was at the concert but said he didn't hear the statement.
"It's a bit disappointing," he said, pivoting to say he's focused on issues such as the economy. He said he meets people around the province, whatever language they speak, who want to see the province succeed.
"I can run into individual pockets of, let's say, emotion, but I've been around long enough that … I still believe together we can fix this."
Higgs, who has been trying to learn French, says he was disappointed in the comments. (Jean-Philippe Hughes/Radio-Canada)
The premier took part in the celebrations earlier in the day, speaking in French.
Melanson, who heard that speech, said Higgs's French has improved during his time in office.
The two met Thursday to discuss various issues affecting New Brunswick francophones, including immigration.
Higgs's fluency became an issue during the 2018 election.
He started French lessons after he won the Progressive Conservative leadership and has delivered prepared speeches in French. But he doesn't do full interviews in French.
On Thursday, Higgs said he still has difficulty conversing in French but can read documents and deliver prepared speeches.
He said he's made progress on learning French, though would likely have to spend weeks or months fully immersed to become bilingual.
"In the meantime, my focus is that I want people to realize that regardless of my shortcomings in the language field, they will recognize that my dedication, and my interest, spreads all across this province," Higgs said.

We have bigger problems than language that we need to deal with. I posted this comment on an article about space and it was disabled by our supposedly impartial taxpayer funded national broadcaster : "I cannot understand how people mock Christianity and Christians. It's clear that there is an explanation for existence and the universe. The fact that there is something about the concept of space and time that the human mind cannot comprehend tells us that Christian teaching is not ludicrous, as the media and government would have us believe. New Brunswick is still 85% Christian, with 50% attending regularly and we couldn't have a stronger society. The truth is in the Bible, it's God's word ."

Im fully bilingual, but all this does is reinforce the view that francophones won't consider Anglos bilingual unless they speak fluent french. I've let a great deal of francophones pass with their less than perfect English skills cause I know first hand how hard it is to learn a second language.

I worship the Christian God as the one true God because Christianity is what makes sense to me, it's what is logical, it's what I belief. His costume looks very creepy, like a wizard, or satanic. I wish we could be proud of our two main linguistic communities without the need to impose bilingualism on everyone. I would have absolutely no problem with a unilingual francophone premier so I don't understand why anyone has a problem with our wonderful premier who is learning to speak in two languages. We need to unite in New Brunswick, let go of the past, build understanding, create an environment where nobody feels their language and heritage is under threat. I don't understand the insistence by a bilingual minority that everyone and everything be bilingual. Sure, billingualism is great and more billingual people would be great, but the way the tiny bilingual minority goes about imposing it on everyone is only creating division and quite frankly is a bit supremacist. We live in a country where the federal government sells marijuana and persecutes Christians, perhaps we should unite in mutual respect and be thankful that the best anglophone Canadians live in New Brunswick and the best francophone Canadians live in New Brunswick.
Daryl Doucette

Welby Trutthough
Reply to @daryl doucette: Well there are certainly many francophones who are more comfortable speaking in French and have better understanding speaking in French. I think everyone is more comfortable speaking in their native language. I am against government imposed bilingualism, but that cuts both ways. I don't believe an English person has automatic rights to government services in English in the peninsula, just the same as I don't believe that a New Brunswicker has automatic rights to services in French in Woodstock. Without government imposed billingualism I think the people of this province would manage just fine. In mostly francophone areas, those providing services would likely be francophones. In mostly anglophone areas, anglophones. In truly bilingual areas, there'd be more bilingual people working. In areas where there were unilingual francophones and unilingual anglophones, there'd be a mix of francophone and anglophone staff. The point is, we don't need the government meddling in our lives and denying born and bred New Brunswickers (of either linguistic community) government job opportunities simply based on the fact that they aren't bilingual. Why does a hospital employee in Caraquet need to know English, and why does a hospital employee in Woodstock need to know French? What difference does it make to the job they perform?
Marguerite Deschamps

Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: This is true. I can go to Edmonton and speak English and nobody blinks, I can imagine that people would be shocked in anglophone areas to have someone come up and begin speaking French to them.
Welby Trutthough
Reply to @Welby Trutthough: Edmunston! auto correct!
David R. Amos
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: Methinks you SANB dudes forgot that my Acadian friend Roger Richard also ran in the last election N'esy Pas?
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: You are completely false. I was up in Kouchibouguac Park went into a store the person refused to speak English which is his right but I know enough French to tell him what I thought of his attitude and left without spending any money there,. His lost and this is a tourist area. And no I am not bilingual.
David R. Amos
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: Where do you think Roger Richard lives?
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Welby Trutthough: Why would people in anglophone areas be shocked there is more than Anglophone and Francophone people living all over this province who native language is neither.
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @David R. Amos: Well let me Guess, Northern N.B.
Marguerite Deschamps
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: you made this up. It ever happened and you know it.
Marguerite Deschamps
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: furthermore, it's a two way street. If Francophones would boycott every place where they could not be served in French, guess who would be on the losing end? Now you know how we feel.
Marguerite Deschamps
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: many times Francophones cannot receive French service at the TH in Saint-Louis-de-Kent, right next to Kouchibouguac National Park!
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: No you don't know how I feel since my Language is near obsolete and 40 % of NBer's have Keltic heritage compared to 30% of French so you have no clue and just want to keep N.B divided.
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: Your just making that up.
David R. Amos
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: Methinks everybody knows my that friend Roger Richard lives in Saint-Louis-de-Kent and I as the Chief of the Amos Clan (who does not have much respect for snobby Anglos who think they understand other cultures) have always felt more welcome in that area by my fellow New Brunswickers Perhaps folks should ask me why I was also welcome in Lousiana back in the 1980s N'esy Pas?
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @David R. Amos: Very good my friend and as I have been brought up , if you give respect you shall receive it from me no matter what language or race one would be.
Marc Martin

Reply to @Welby Trutthough: Most services have been concentrated in Fredericton, in fact id say 80% + are. So what is your solution to put back all the services in the regions ?
Marc Martin
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: I absolutely agree with you, there will never be a unilingual premier ever, can you imagine the outrage ? And yet we are the entitled ones.
Marc Martin
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: omg you dont have to go south, people still snear at me when I speak French here in Fredericton.
Marc Martin
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: Their kind make a lot of things up...get used it.
Marc Martin
Reply to @Bernie Heather McIntyre: Keltic is not an official language now is it ?
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Marc Martin: Oh so now your saying Higgs is not a unilingual premier.
Bernie Heather McIntyre
Reply to @Marc Martin: No it isn't but we don't cry about it like your kind.

It doesn't take much to start a language fight in NB. It is like a match to dry kindling. Haters just waiting to pounce because of a stupid comment by an irrelevant artist. People need to take a valium or two and go get some fresh air.
David R. Amos

The singer obviously understand the English that Premier Higgs spoke, so what's the problem??? Language is simply a communications tool. We need to start looking at ways that we are similar and stop celebrating ways in which we are different.

Im fully bilingual, but all this does is reinforce the view that francophones won't consider Anglos bilingual unless they speak fluent french. I've let a great deal of francophones pass with their less than perfect English skills cause I know first hand how hard it is to learn a second language.

Anyone who aspires to become Premier should have become bilingual a long time ago. Higgs has no excuse for his linguistic shortcomings.
Lou Bell
Reply to @Marguerite Deschamps: Language should be a token requirement at best. Intelligence Trumps it every time , except of course when the SANB Liberals are in office .
