New Brunswick economy sheds 7,300 full-time jobs in July, unemployment reaches 8.5%

Gains in part-time work sees province's overall employment drop by 4,800 jobs, Statistics Canada figures show

New Brunswick's economy shed 7,300 full-time jobs in July, pushing the unemployment rate up by nearly a percentage point over the previous month to 8.5 per cent, figures released by Statistics Canada on Friday show.

Overall employment decreased by 4,800 jobs, thanks to gains in part-time employment, according to the monthly labour force survey.

Employment in the province held steady compared to the same time last year.

Across Canada, employment remained relatively unchanged in July for the third consecutive month. The unemployment rate edged up by 0.2 percentage points to 5.7 per cent.

The other provinces that saw decreases in employment included Nova Scotia and Alberta, while Prince Edward Island and Quebec saw increases.

Reply to @David R. Amos:

David, it's just all those federal infrastructure projects running out of money before the election. I'm sure you know the "deal", boost employment, boost GDP, all with deficit spending. What you really aren't supposed to notice, in a supposid booming economy, is our money is worth less, and less, compared to foreign currency.

NB residents and NB government are the reason NB hasn't any jobs!
Between shutting down industry because of their beloved swamp land and Bilingualism .
Ottawa can't keep handing out useless government grants to a welfare friendly province.
And look at all the EI abuse that goes on in NB. How can anyone help NB if they don't want to help themselves??

Marc Martin
Reply to @Les Cooper: Please show me were bilingualism was a cause for the lost of employment...

Bill Thompson

The Liberals in New Brunswick have told Justin Trudeau to stay home this election. They don't want him campaigning here because it will hurt their chances of getting re-elected. LOL! One MP is now telling everyone that it the person in the riding that you are electing ...not the Prime Minister. LOL!!!!

Welby Trutthough
Reply to @Bill Thompson: the liberal MPs in New Brunswick are terrible. A lot of nuts who buy into Justin's ideas of peoplekind and marijuana. Sooner New Brunswick become a blue fortress, the better. The way these liberal MPs act, it's as if they've never spoken to real New Brunswickers outside of their party activists world.

Reply to @Bill Thompson: But Higgs is not a liberal...He is the cause for the losts of jobs.

Available jobs are decreasing, yet government claims the province needs more immigrants (newcomers) to increase the population and fill jobs. Something does not add up ..... part time job gains cannot make up for full time jobs lost.

Cracks in the Liberal monolith...

Anne Bérubé
Reply to @Alex Forbes: But New Brunswick still votes liberal, no matter what at the federal level and most of the time, provincial level as well.

Alex Forbes
Reply to @Anne Bérubé: As I have said, you could have a scarecrow run as a Liberal in a French region and it would get elected.
