Leader says Greens ready to work with other parties as N.S. 'lurches from crisis to crisis'
'These problems are bigger than our differences, bigger than any political party," says Anthony Edmonds
The Green Party of Nova Scotia had lined up more candidates to run in a 2025 provincial election, but leader Anthony Edmonds said Tim Houston's decision to move away from his fixed election date meant many of those people were unable to run this fall.
He told about a dozen people gathered at a community centre in the constituency where he's running — Waverley-Fall River-Beaver Bank — that a snap election is problematic for a smaller party with no elected members.
"Our aspiration on the fixed election date was to run a full slate of candidates," Edmonds said Friday.
He said many potential candidates "weren't able to drop everything that they were doing in their personal lives and careers in order to run."
Greens have 23 candidates in N.S.
The party has fielded 23 candidates, 11 in the Halifax area, four in the Annapolis Valley, two in Cape Breton and the rest scattered across the province.
He warned voters not to count on seeing a Green candidate on their doorstep.
"Zero of us have a full-time, paid job that allows us to campaign," said Edmonds. "Many of us are balancing our careers, our families and our political activism."
Unlike the other main parties that have been taking shots at each other during the campaign, Edmonds used the Green campaign launch to say his party would work collaboratively with any or all of them on the province's most pressing issues.
"We find ourselves now lurching from crisis to crisis," said Edmonds, pointing to affordability, public health and well-being, education, trust in public institutions and the climate.
"These problems are bigger than our differences, bigger than any political party," said Edmonds. "And that's why we need to come together, like all good Nova Scotians do in a crisis, and solve it together as a community."
Hoping for a breakthrough
Although the party has received meagre support in past elections — less than three per cent of the vote in each of the past four general elections — Edmonds hopes for a breakthrough this time.
"Things can turn on a dime and it's entirely possible that we could see one or more Greens elected," he said.
Election day in Nova Scotia is Nov. 26.

The Green Party, very popular in Europe, has damaged its reputation in Canada because of their almost exclusive advocacy for environmental justice. If you take the time ( and it’s worth it ), to examine their Canadian ideological policy positions, you might be surprised to learn that they have some very progressive ideas of how to expand the economy and deal with fiscal responsibility. Unfortunately the media, obsessed with click bait responses, largely have ignored them except to report on anything that negatively impacts their message.

Parties face different challenges, present different narratives as N.S. election kicks off
PCs seek a second term, but the Liberals and NDP say they haven't earned it
When Tim Houston stood in the Nova Scotia legislature in 2021 to speak in support of fixed election dates — the first piece of legislation he put forward after becoming premier — he said it was a way to create predictability for the public, prospective candidates and volunteers.
He said it would also level the playing field for the government and opposition parties.
"We all know that governments sometimes pick a date that they think benefits them," Houston said at the time. "Snap election, high in the polls, whatever the case may be."
Being the government to finally put an end to that and set July 15, 2025, as the next provincial election was "truly an honour," he said.
On Sunday, after a month that saw his government make no fewer than 37 announcements costing a total of more than $402 million, and at a time when his party is high in the polls, Houston called a snap election.
Houston arrives at the home of the lieutenant-governor on Sunday with his wife, Carol, and son, Zachary. (Kayla Hounsell/CBC)
While the party leaders vying to replace the Progressive Conservatives as government are sure to point to Houston's broken promise and month of announcements, Dalhousie University professor Lori Turnbull thinks Houston is far enough into his mandate that it will not be a burning issue for voters.
Turnbull thinks something other than voters punishing Houston for not keeping his word on the election date is more probable.
"I think a more likely outcome could be that voters don't see a huge need for an election right now, so they don't show up," said Turnbull, a professor in the school's faculty of management and department of political science.
Cape Breton University political scientist Tom Urbaniak thinks that if the early election call turns out to be a problem for Houston, it would be in the context of keeping promises.
"It feeds into a credibility issue," he said.
Targeting broken promises
Liberal and NDP candidates could seize on that or other broken Tory promises, such as the reversal on proclaiming the Coastal Protection Act or not giving the privacy commissioner more powers, or accountability issues such as the way the PC government spent less and less time in the legislature and spent more than a billion dollars a year outside of its own budgets.
But the promise most likely to be scrutinized is the PC pledge from 2021 to fix health care.
During their first mandate, the PCs signed new contracts with doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health-care workers, all in an attempt to attract and retain more people. Changes have been made to try to speed up credentialing, with health-care leaders acknowledging that the fastest way to address staffing shortages in the province is through immigration.
Thousands more long-term care rooms are planned or under construction and the government pushed hard to increase the use of technology in the health-care system. Many of these details and others are included in a booklet the government mailed to 480,000 addresses just before the election call at a cost of $158,000. The Liberals have filed a complaint with Elections Nova Scotia about the document.
The PCs will point to all the new ways people without a family doctor can access care without having to resort to an emergency department visit, but the Liberals and NDP will point out that twice as many people are without a family practice now as when Houston took office in 2021.
Shovels in the ground but contracts not signed
There is also construction work planned for or happening at hospitals around the province, yet the Tories were unable to finalize a contract for the first phase of the Halifax Infirmary redevelopment before the election call.
There also remains no contract for the sale of a former hotel construction site to long-term care provider Shannex, although the company is well into the work of converting the property to care for patients who no longer need a hospital bed but are still convalescing or awaiting a nursing home placement.
Nova Scotia's auditor general has been critical of both projects for the lack of checks and balances considering the massive amount of public money involved. In the case of the former hotel site, she questioned the purchase of the former hotel project altogether.
Houston has been unmoved, saying speed and action is what the system requires. In the last election he said things would take time to get better, but he was willing to spend whatever it takes to bring about change.
Urbaniak said most voters probably didn't expect health care could be fixed in a single mandate. He said the question for them will be whether they believe the changes to date are good enough.
Challenges for Churchill, Chender
The Liberals and NDP face questions of their own.
In her first election at the helm of the NDP, Claudia Chender will try to grow support for a party that has remained in third place and largely stagnant since the defeat of former NDP premier Darrell Dexter in 2013.
Although the party had attempted to set the agenda on issues such as housing and affordability and poverty reduction, they've received no credit for it in the past two elections. Meanwhile, they watched this year as the Tories were the party to finally index income assistance rates to the rate of inflation.
But on housing and health care, in particular, the pitch will be that Houston and his team have fallen woefully short. The NDP has proposed legislation to try to help ease the housing crisis over the past three years, but little of it has interested the PCs.
Chender will point to the way the price of rent in Nova Scotia has skyrocketed in the last three years, and the fact that none of the initiatives advanced by the Tories have materially changed that.
Liberal Leader Zach Churchill greets supporters and fellow candidates at a rally in Halifax on Sunday evening. (Kheira Morellon/Radio-Canada)
Liberal Leader Zach Churchill faces, perhaps, even more challenges.
While it's his first campaign as party leader, Churchill has been an MLA since 2010. He'll be seeking some way this election to reintroduce himself to a public that might already think it knows what he's about.
His party will walk a tightrope of trying to criticize the Tory record on health care while also having to acknowledge it was in power for eight years before the last election.
Another challenge for the Liberals will be the loss of veteran candidates who have decided to retire, along with two candidates who left the party this year and are now running for the PCs.
Liberals allege former MLA who switched to PCs committed privacy breach
N.S. Liberals promise to cover transit fares if they win next election
Last week, Houston attempted to neutralize a Liberal platform commitment — reducing the HST by two percentage points— when he announced the HST would be reduced by one percentage point in April. Nova Scotians need tax relief, he said, but they cannot afford the proposed Liberal cut.
NDP Leader Claudia Chender is surrounded by candidates for the party during a rally in Dartmouth on Sunday. (CBC)
The steepest hill for Churchill to climb, however, is the certainty that Houston and his team will spend this election trying to link the provincial Liberal leader with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the unpopular federal carbon tax.
The Tories never missed an opportunity to make that connection during the past few years. Earlier this month, Houston labelled Churchill a "Trudeau Liberal," while adding that he is not a "Poilievre Conservative."
"I'm not a member of any federal party. I'm a Nova Scotian. I focus on Bluenosers first and foremost and what's best for Nova Scotians."
Urbaniak said it's a safe bet the public will hear plenty about the federal Liberal government between now and Nov. 26. He speculated that the most likely reason for Houston to go to the polls early is that he doesn't want to miss an opportunity to have an election while the low-polling Trudeau is still prime minister.
"The Liberal brand generally is hurting right now and so that does have a spillover effect to the provincial Liberals, and the PCs are going to try to amplify that as much as they can."
Houston didn't exactly shy away from this suggestion last week when he was asked about the possibility of an early election.
"There is incredible turmoil in Ottawa right now," he told reporters.
How the leaders frame the ballot question
In Houston's view, the federal government is shortchanging the province on funding for upgrades to the Chignecto Isthmus and harming Nova Scotians through a lack of enforcement on illegal fishing and the imposition of a consumer price on carbon.
"We need to make sure that we do whatever we can to put Nova Scotia in the best … position to bargain and to be respected, and I think that's been difficult."
Churchill didn't have much time for that rationale while talking to reporters last week.
"That's BS," he said.
"[Houston] does have a strong mandate — he's got a majority government. And he is going to try and trick people in this province into believing that this election is going to change any outcomes in Ottawa. It's not."
During the Tories' first mandate, Nova Scotia became one of the most expensive places to live in Canada, he said, and issues like the housing crisis are not getting better.
Chender agreed, saying Houston's majority government gave him more than enough clout to negotiate with Ottawa.
"Although he doesn't like to negotiate," she said. "He likes to fight."
Chender said that when people go to cast their ballot, they'll be looking at the PC record and see a party and leader looking to distract from the shortcomings of their first term in government.
"We welcome the chance to have that conversation on the doorsteps and in any venue that we can because this election is going to be about health, it's going to be about housing and it's going to be about the cost of living."
Green Party of Nova Scotia Leader disappointed with early Election call
Halifax 2024-10-28
Reacting to Sunday’s early election call, Green Party of Nova Scotia Leader Anthony Edmonds pointed to Premier Tim Houston’s disregard for his own Bill 1, “I’m very disappointed that Tim Houston has broken his promise of a fixed election date”. Elections Nova Scotia has reported that an early election call will increase their costs. Edmonds also expressed concern that the early call would lead to lower turnout, “I fear that a snap election will see many voters stay home, which is disheartening in this era of record low turnouts at the polls”.
The Green Party of Nova Scotia plans to run a full slate of candidates. Most districts already have Greens seeking nomination, and the party is actively recruiting candidates for the remaining districts. Every voter should have the choice to vote Green.
The Green Party of Nova Scotia is focused on making a breakthrough this election. Edmonds emphasized the importance of electing a Green representative, “Politics in Nova Scotia need deeper change than just another change of government. We need to change the landscape by bringing Greens to the Legislature. Electing a Green MLA will send a message – and a messenger – to government”.

Federal and Provincial Greens Join Forces To Call For Premier Houston To Support Environmental Racism Bill C-226 from Elizabeth May
HALIFAX – The Green Party of Nova Scotia and the Green Party of Canada joined forces today to call on Nova Scotia Premier, Tim Houston, to help end environmental racism, not just here at home but across the country.
Ending environmental racism, the disproportionate location of polluting or hazardous sites near Indigenous, racialized or other marginalized communities, is at the heart of Bill-C-226 which was introduced by Green Party parliamentary leader Elizabeth May MP in the last session of Parliament.
This bill would develop a national strategy to assess, prevent and address environmental racism. The Interim Leader of the GPC, Amita Kuttner, joined Green Party of Nova Scotia leader, Anthony Edmonds in Halifax today to help draw attention to this issue that Nova Scotians know so well.
Bill C-226 carries on the legacy of the earlier, similar Bill C-230, which was put forward in 2020 by then Liberal MP Lenore Zann and enjoyed multi-partisan support but did not become law before the 2021 election. On June 22, Bill C-226 passed second reading and will need broad support in the House of Commons.
Interim Green Party leader Amita Kuttner says environmental racism is an issue that needs to be addressed urgently : “ For many reasons, marginalised communities are the first to feel the impacts of climate change and environmental destruction. Directly addressing environmental racism is more than necessary, both past and present and working diligently to prevent future instances. “
Green Party of Nova Scotia leader Anthony Edmonds calls this an issue that transcends politics: “Lenore Zann saw environmental racism as both a rural and urban issue. Dr. Ingrid Waldron saw it as both a healthcare and environment issue. I see it as an issue that must be above politics. Clean air and water aren’t just fundamental to our health; they are a birthright. By putting a stop to environmental racism, we are defending our birthright, and this means a better future for all of us.”
The Green Party of Nova Scotia calls on Premier Tim Houston to speak out in support of Bill C-226, in the spirit of his own government’s Bill 57, the Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act. That act included an opposition amendment to establish a panel on environmental racism by the end of this year. Working alongside the federal government to address environmental racism could deliver better results for Nova Scotians.
Environmental racism has affected a number of communities in Nova Scotia, many of which have been extensively catalogued by the ENRICH Project. Dr. Ingrid Waldron’s book, There’s Something In The Water, drew wide attention to a tragic part of Nova Scotia’s record on this issue. Waldron’s book and the documentary film that it inspired, directed by Elliot Page and Ian Daniel, tell the stories of communities like Shelburne, where water can be unfit even for bathing.
“It’s time for all orders of government to put people and planet before politics and work together to end environmental racism and create a livable future for everyone.”
Elizabeth May sees this support in a good light : "As Premier Houston seems to put the "progressive" into Progressive Conservative, I really appreciate any support. Every single Nova Scotia Conservative, in fact every Conservative MP in parliament voted against C-226. Fighting for environmental justice must not be partisan. As the abuser of environmental rights, Northern Pulp fights Nova Scotia in court, trying to claim hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, let's take a stand. The toxic pollution of Pictou Landing First Nation must not be forgotten. We need C-226 and environmental justice. "

NDP gets help from democracy expert
CBC News · Posted: Jan 09, 2006 4:23 PM AT
An international expert on democracy has flown all the way from Egypt
to help NDP candidate John Carty campaign in Fredericton.
Dominic Cardy is with a group called The National Democratic
Institute. Its members include such people as former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter. The group's mission is to teach democratic values and
spread democracy around the world.
Cardy has taught about democracy in Algeria, Bangladesh, and Cambodia
during the past few years. When he heard his friend John Carty was
running for office back in his home town of Fredericton, he hopped on
a plane.
"It was a strange experience," Cardy said. "One evening I was watching
the sun go down over the pyramids, and the next evening watched it go
down over Fredericton airport as I came into land."
Cardy is no relation to the NDP candidate. But he loves elections and
loves getting people pumped up about democracy.
Carty the candidate is running against federal Indian Affairs Minister
Andy Scott, Conservative Pat Lynch, Green candidate Philip Duchastel
and independent David Amos. The riding has sent Scott to Ottawa for
the last four elections, despite the best efforts of the other
parties.
Cardy says he doesn't care how tough the race his – he just wants
people to participate in the process. "People have forgotten how
incredibly precious these gifts that our ancestors fought for are and
were just giving them away. It makes me furious when I talk to people
and people just say 'ah there's no point in voting.'"
After election day, Dominic Cardy is flying back home to his wife in
Kathmandu, Nepal. He hopes to leave behind a new Member of Parliament
for Fredericton, his friend John Carty for the NDP.

A champion for a better future in Malpeque
Heath MacDonald and Justin Trudeau are the only team with a real plan
to grow our economy, protect people’s health, protect a clean
environment, and make life better for families right here in our
community.
While Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives are focused on going backward with
cuts to vital services that families rely on, Liberals will keep
moving forward with bold action to create good new jobs, invest in the
middle class and the most vulnerable, and ensure that everyone has a
real and fair chance at success.
Together, we can elect a dedicated Liberal Member of Parliament to
work with Justin Trudeau to build a better future for everyone.

Cumberland North pits high-profile Independent vs. former 7-term MP
Newcomers for the PCs and NDP, meanwhile, hope to shake things up in
border district
Michael Gorman · CBC News · Posted: Aug 10, 2021 6:00 AM AT
While some people see this as a two-person race, David Wightman and
Lauren Skabar are hoping to change that.
Running for the Progressive Conservatives, Wightman has had some
catching up to do because of his late entry into the campaign.
Election materials were late arriving, and while Smith-McCrossin and
Casey signs pepper the district, Wightman only recently started
putting his up.
But he's hoping a platform that focuses on health care, along with
community anger directed at the Liberals, will hold him in good stead.
"I think the Liberals have had their turn to try and fix things, and I
think they've only gotten worse," he said, pointing to the growing
wait list of people looking for a family doctor.
While he expresses interest in working on a variety of issues,
Wightman said health care is top of mind for him as a stroke survivor
and because his wife went through treatment for cancer. There are
aspects of the system unique to that region that Wightman hopes to
address.
"One of the things I'd like to see is a better approach to how to get
people to medical appointments that are travelling back and forth
across the [New Brunswick] border," he said.
A time to unite
Skabar is the NDP candidate. Her father, Brian, was elected in the
district in 2009 as part of the NDP's surge to power, but she said
politics was in her blood long before that.
Health care for the area is a major issue, said Skabar, given routine
emergency department closures at community sites and difficulties
getting enough nurses and doctors to the region.
"Until we start incentivizing health-care professionals coming to
places like Cumberland North and our smaller communities, we aren't
going to see any improvements," she said.

"Both Houston and Burrill were critical of Rankin dropping this idea
in the midst of an election campaign.
"I don't think it indicates the kind of grasp and soundness that we
would look to see from a party that seeks to govern the province,"
said Burrill.
Houston said: "I'll just speak bluntly, our campaign is going very
well and he's concerned heading into the last week of the campaign."
