Anti-spray group launches campaign to ban glyphosate

Rally at Legislative Assembly to present petition and spread the campaign province-wide

A few dozen people turned out at the legislature Wednesday to protest the use of glyphosate and other herbicides in the province.

They are part of a new group called Stop Spraying New Brunswick, made up of hunters, environmentalists, and others opposed to spraying in New Brunswick forests.

Matthieu Vienneau of Kedgwick, says a recent report by The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, deeming glyphosate "probably carcinogenic to humans" was one of the reasons the group was started.

"Between that and all the deer herds that are dying," said Vienneau. "I'm a New Brunswick hunter, we've had this problem for years."

Glyphosate is a herbicide used widely in the province as a defoliant by a number of companies, including NB Power and J.D. Irving Ltd.

It is currently under review by the office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health, as well as being re-evaluated by Health Canada.

The group gathered 1,100 names on a petition, mostly in the Kedgwick area, to ban pesticide spraying. They say their aim is to get one-tenth of the province's population to sign it.

Green Party leader David Coon accepts a petition with 1,100 names calling for a ban on herbicide spraying in New Brunswick. (CBC)

"Our goal is to ban this, we gotta gather 75,000 names to make a real impact on this," said Vienneau.

The group presented Green Party leader David Coon with the petition, which he will table. Coon told the group they have his complete support, and he'll do whatever he can in the legislature.

Stop-Spraying

December 5, 2016

SSNB has the largest petition that has EVER happened in New Brunswick:
Another 13,439 signatures to make a grand total of 27,225 to Stop
Herbicide Spraying in New Brunswick Public Forests and NB Power
right-of-ways.

FREDERICTON – On Tuesday December 6, 2016 13,404 WRITTEN signatures
will be tabled at the Provincial Legislature which demands that New
Brunswick stops spraying of public forests and NB Power right of ways.
This third petition presentations represents again communities from
every part of the province including francophone, anglophone and
Indigenous communities. The petition drive is continuing to gain
momentum and SSNB will continue with future petition signature
submissions.

A delegation of community organizers representing “Stop Spraying in
New Brunswick” (SSNB) will be travelling to Fredericton from
communities across New Brunswick to gather for a photo in front of the
Legislature at noon on Tuesday, December 6 2016. During this time
supportive MLAs have been invited to join us in this photo.

SSNB has received word, that in addition to Fredericton MLA David
Coon,  MLA Jake Stewart (South-West Miramichi) will sign the petition
and stand with us in the photo. MLA Jake Stewart has spoken out
against forest spraying in the past year, and we are pleased that he
is joining us.

Petition Presentation schedule:

Tuesday December 6, 2016
12:00 noon photo with supporting MLAs
1:00 pm: peaceful entry into the Legislature building to witness
Fredericton MLA David Coon as he tables the signatures, and to hear
supportive words from MLAs who are supportive of our demands.
LOCATION:
Provincial Legislature Buildings
706 Queen Street
Fredericton, New Brunswick

As you know, the Stop Spraying in New Brunswick movement has been
growing rapidly since the 2015 hunting season when hunters found that
there were almost no deer in our public forests. A catastrophic deer
collapse continues, with the deer population now one-quarter of what
it was 30 years ago.  A petition campaign which was started on
December 16 2015, with an initial submission of almost 1200 signatures
from Kedgwick, was followed by the submission of 12,686 signatures on
May 18, 2016. This petition to Stop Herbicide Spraying in New
Brunswick Public Forests and NB Power right-of-ways is now the LARGEST
petition collection on record in New Brunswick history. Our government
has a duty to listen to the 27,225 voters. This number will continue
to grow, as more community members are becoming active in this
movement. Every week we have new people coming forward to collect
signatures in their communities.

In September 2016, a retired New Brunswicker, Amédée Boucher became
actively involved in this issue, and collected over 7,000 signatures
on the Acadian Peninsula in a period of just 2 months together with a
few other residents. Therefore, an event was held by organizers in
Tracadie, supported by SSNB, to discuss the spraying issue with great
attendance. That evening Fredericton MLA David Coon, who had taken
time out of his busy schedule to travel up to Tracadie on that Friday
evening, received a total of 12,877 signatures that included the
signatures collected by Amédée Boucher and another batch received by
SSNB from all over the province. On December 2, 2016 another 566
signatures arrived in the mail to SSNB. The local Liberal MLAs refused
to attend.

“The people of the Acadian Peninsula refuse to be poisoned,” said
Amédée Boucher, responsible for having collected a bulk of signatures
in that area, “but signing  the petition is only the first step. It’ll
take your presence on December 6, 2016 to leave a clear message to our
politicians: enough is enough.”

Recent data from Maine Inland F&W, Quebec Chasse et peche, NSDNR and
NBDNR shows that hunting numbers in NB are now 15% of what they were
in 1985, whereas in Quebec the numbers have increased threefold and in
Maine they have stayed relatively stable over the same period of time.
The combination of increased clearcutting and glyphosate spraying of
monoculture softwood plantations are eliminating a very large amount
of deer food, removing enough browse to feed 32,000 deer each and
every year.  People who live near or in the woods have noticed the
effects on the deer population in New Brunswick themselves.

Wildlife guide and woodlot owner Leo Goguen from Rogersville is out in
the woods all the time and has stated this before,  “Our livelihood
depends on hunting wildlife and fowl. Irving not only poisoned the
meat we eat but destroyed multiple game habitat that this game depends
on to reproduce and strive. We are losing revenue on recreational
activities and our families are being robbed of healthy food.”  Leo
has also felt the detrimental effects on his livelihood as a private
woodlot owner.

Northern New Brunswick is feeling the pain: “We at ÉCOVIE are very
much preoccupied by what is being done in our forests”, says Clément
Arpin, retired businessman from a value-added wood industry. “28% of
all the forests sprayed in Canada are in NB and NB represents 0.7% of
the surface of our country. This is a lot of pesticides sprayed all
around us! Our beautiful mixed forests are being transformed into
plantations….A monoculture is not a forest. We have to realize that a
forest with diversity will bring diversity in jobs and a stability in
our economy. We cannot extract maple syrup from a spruce tree. So why
do we have to kill hardwood when those trees provided us a revenue
increase of 1000% in the last decade as stated by our Prime Minister,
Brian Gallant, on one of his visits in Kedgwick? We should work with
the forest, put our people to work instead of working with pesticides
and destroying our beautiful diversity.”

MLA David Coon has been a long-standing champion for the cause to stop
herbicide spraying of NB forests and hydro-power lines . On December
2, 2016, David Coon released this powerful statement: “ Stop the
Runaway Clearcutting and Say Goodbye to Herbicide Spraying”
http://greenpartynb.ca/en/8-news/1007-stop-the-runaway-clearcutting-and-say-goodbye-to-herbicide-spraying.
This quote from his statement says enough: “Ours is one of only three
Canadian provinces clinging to the practice, despite numerous
petitions similar to the present one, and long-standing, vocal
objections from our rural residents. They have a right to a safe
environment, to live free of fear for their well-being and that of the
wildlife inhabiting our forests.”

“The fact that taxpayers are paying to spray our forests at a cost of
$2.4M a year is just ludicrous”, says SSNB organizer Dr. Caroline
Lubbe-D’Arcy. “On top of that, our forestry is creating less jobs than
EVER before, which makes no sense. We need to bring thinning crews
back to work. We have trained workers sitting at home so that an
unsustainable forest management practice can exist. People could be
working and contributing to our economy instead of being
underemployed.”

Please arrange to meet members of Stop Spraying New Brunswick and
other New Brunswickers who are alarmed about the continued use of
these sprays outside the legislature buildings on Tuesday December 6,
2016 at noon. All political leaders and MLA’s are invited to attend
and show support.

Acadie.

http://chau.teleinterrives.com/img/nouvelles/normales/p_tition_pesticides__8juin2017_-0rnts.jpg

  http://chau.teleinterrives.com/img/nouvelles/normales/p_tition_pesticides__8juin2017_-2-hctk2.jpg

Clearly there are two very sneaky little dudes hanging around Fat Fred City with the name Matthew Hayes EH?

One is obviously a snobby spin doctor for the Green Meanies and the other is a snobby lawyer hired to sue them. How wonderfully weird is that?

Written by Matthew Hayes on August 3, 2017

The Alliance to Stop Spraying NB held a media conference on August 1 in Fredericton. Photo by Jon MacNeill.

A senior employee at JD Irving, Ltd. warned the Miramichi Headwaters Salmon Federation they would face reprisals if they went public with their opposition to glyphosate spraying, according to a spokesperson for the Federation.

The Federation became the first salmon conservation group to go public with its opposition to glyphosate spraying.

John Gilbert, JD Irving’s chief biologist, contacted the Federation’s president, Randy Lutes, to ask him not to attend a press conference organized by the Alliance to Stop Spraying in New Brunswick on August 1st.

The phone call was confirmed by Lutes, who said Gilbert told him he might not buy a ticket to the Federation’s annual dinner.

JD Irving, Ltd. responded to the NB Media Co-op’s request for comment by denying that Gilbert spoke on behalf of JDI.  In an email statement, Mary Keith, JDI’s communications officer, stated: “Mr. Gilbert made the call without the knowledge of JDI and his comments were his own, not those of the company.”

Downplaying the importance of the call, Judy Lutes, secretary and treasurer of the Federation, said, “We don’t want to burn bridges if we don’t have to.”

Other members of the Federation who heard about the call felt it was an attempt at intimidation.

“John Gilbert warned us that JDI would withdraw access to the river.  It has been open since, well, forever,” Kevin Shaw, a director of the Federation, told the press conference.

Currently, Federation members access the river through Irving property, and individuals who wish to fish on the north branch of the Southwest Miramichi must be members of the Federation.

When contacted by the NB Media Co-op, Gilbert said he had “not officially” spoken to the Federation.  He was aware of concerns Federation members had about glyphosate spraying and said he had made an offer to have JD Irving scientists address the group.  He refused further comment.

In a statement from Mary Keith, JDI affirmed it continues to be focused on science-based forest practices and responsible use of herbicides.

Growing opposition to glyphosate

Glyphosate is used by several forestry companies in the Juniper area, and large clear-cuts there have drawn criticism as New Brunswickers debate forest management practices.

“People are sick and tired of the forest being poisoned, and there are a lot of first hand accounts of people seeing the forest around their homes being sprayed,” Shaw said.

Shaw grew up in the woods of Juniper and says there are no deer in his forest. Deer harvest has dropped 60% since the mid-1980s, according to the Alliance.

“What’s changed in our forest to cause this loss? Clearcutting and spraying of glyphosates are the two things that have changed,” said Shaw.

Members of the Alliance are also concerned about the potential human health impact of spraying, calling its continuation an ongoing experiment with New Brunswickers.

Glyphosate is a herbicide that kills hardwood trees and ground vegetation.  It is the active ingredient in Monsanto products such as VisionMax and Forza that are sprayed to grow softwood plantations in the province.

In 2015, the World Health Organization’s cancer research body listed glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen.”  Last month, California won a court victory to have glyphosate products carry a label about its carcinogenic effects.

The Alliance is calling on New Brunswickers to oppose the spraying of glyphosate.  According to a 2016 report of the Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health, 40% of forest land cut in 2014 was sprayed with glyphosate, compared to only 28% in Ontario, and 11% in Nova Scotia.  Quebec banned spraying Crown forest in 2001 due to public health concerns.

Margo Sheppard of the Council of Canadians, Fredericton Chapter, said that her members were opposed to glyphosate spraying because it was a “quick fix, with long term health and environmental costs.”

Forestry companies have argued that the spraying is needed to keep the industry competitive in the province.  NB Power also says that they need to spray to keep costs down.

Several speakers at the press conference talked about the inefficiencies and low employment rates from outdated forest management practices.

“The province doesn’t employ as many people in its forests as other neighbouring jurisdictions,” said Caroline Lubbe-D’Arcy, a  spokesperson with Stop Spraying NB (SSNB). Kim MacPherson, New Brunswick’s auditor general reported in 2015 that the province lost $7-10 million each year from its Crown forestry operations in the years she covered, 2009-2014. She cited the costly silviculture program as a key factor.

According to the Alliance, the New Brunswick public is paying $2.5 million per year for spraying that could be used to hire up to 1000 bush cutters instead. “Doesn’t it make more sense to employ people who could be contributing economically to their community?” said Lubbe-D’Arcy.

Further action against glyphosate spraying in New Brunswick is planned for later this summer.  Alliance member ÉcoVie from Kedgwick is preparing a camp-in on clearcut land that is slated to be sprayed later this summer.  According to spokesperson Francine Levesque, “we are being drowned in spray in our region.”

The campers will set up along a road leading to Mount Carleton Wilderness Park on Route 385 near the Tobique River, August 5, 6 and 7.

SWN returning to thump Wednesday: Elsipogtog War Chief
National News | 11. Nov, 2013 by APTN National News | 0 Comments

(Members of an RCMP tactical until involved in Oct. 17 raid on
anti-fracking camp blocking SWN’s vehicles)

APTN National News
ELSIPGOTOG FIRST NATION, NB–SWN Resources Canada is planning to resume
its controversial shale gas seismic exploration work on Wednesday,
according to Elsipogtog War Chief John Levi

Levi said SWN’s lawyer Michael Connors, who is a partner with East
Coast law firm McInnes Cooper, met with several dozen people from
Elsipogtog First Nation and the surrounding communities late Sunday
afternoon.

Levi said Connors told the people that SWN would withdraw a lawsuit
against several community members if the Houston-based firm was
allowed to finish its exploration work unimpeded.

“We said no, we are going to be there,” said Levi, in an interview
with APTN National News. “What we told him was we are going to be
there Wednesday.”

The meeting was held at a longhouse erected at an anti-fracking
encampment used over the past summer. The area sits off Hwy 116 near
Elsipogtog First Nation.

Connors told the people in the longhouse that SWN would be working for
14 days and warned them not to block the company’s movements or they
would face violence.

“I’m not asking anyone not to protest, but I am asking that we don’t
do anything that would lead to violence,” said Connors, according to
video of the meeting posted on Facebook by Brian Milliea.
“Unfortunately, blockades lead to violence.”

Connors said SWN just wants to finish its work and leave the area.

“We don’t want violence and if we can get through two weeks then we
will go away for awhile,” said Connors. “I am not saying we are not
going to come back, we may not come back, but I think everybody needs
some time, you know a break.”

Levi told Connors that the community would not be backing down.

“We are going to be there. Whatever happens, the ball is in your
court. Whatever happens, you’re the ones who are going to make the
calls,” said Levi, according to the nine minute video. “Us as Natives
and the protectors of this land, we are going to protect it, it is our
land, we never ceded this land and we are going to protect it before
these waters are contaminated.”

A woman in the crowd, who identified as non-Native, also pledged
opposition to the exploration.

“As non-Natives we are going to protect the future of our children,”
said the woman, in the video. “So non-Natives and Natives are
together.”

SWN has faced intense and prolonged opposition to its shale gas
exploration work around Elsipogtog First Nation which exploded after
heavily armed RCMP tactical units raided an anti-fracking camp along
Route 134 on Oct. 17. The camp was blocking several of SWN’s
exploration vehicles in a compound owned by JD Irving Ltd. in Rexton,
NB.

While the raid freed SWN’s trucks, it sparked day-long clashes between
Elsipogtog residents and the RCMP. Several RCMP vehicles were torched
and about 40 people were arrested.

A camp still remains on Route 134, which sits about 15 kilometres
southeast of Elsipogtog.

SWN was initially expected to resume its exploration work last Monday.
Elsipogtog Chief Aaron Sock told reporters last Sunday that SWN’s
lawyers had informed him the company was planning to finish its
seismic exploration work along Hwy 11.

While community members mobilized to confront the company, the thumper
trucks, which are used in the seismic exploration, did not appear.

Levi said Connors told the meeting that the company would be laying
out geophones on a section of Hwy 11 on Tuesday and that the thumper
trucks would return on Wednesday.

Geophones pick up the vibrations from thumper trucks to create imaging
of shale gas deposits.

The exploration area is about 46 kilometres north of Elsipogtog.

People in Elsipogtog and surrounding communities fear the discovery of
shale gas would lead to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The
controversial extraction method is viewed by many as posing a dire
threat to water sources.

“They are pretty desperate for trying to arrange something like that,”
said Levi. “We are not taking the bait and we are going to be there
protecting mother earth.”

Fracking company sues protesters
Updated
10:06 am, October 30th, 2013
5:13 pm, October 29th, 2013

HALIFAX — The company trying to explore for shale gas near Rexton,
N.B., is suing Native anti-fracking protesters because it alleges they
held its security workers captive, threatened them and destroyed an
expensive piece of drilling equipment.

In its statement of claim dated Oct. 3, SWN Resources Canada Inc.
names 12 defendants, including protesters Willi Nolan and Ann Pohl and
self-described Mi'kmaq warriors Susan Patles and Jim Pictou.

The Texas-based company alleges people identifying themselves as
"warriors" held its security workers captive prior to Oct. 17, when
the RCMP enforced a court injunction against the Native blockade near
the site where the company is trying to find shale gas.

The statement of claim alleges the workers were trapped near their
seismic equipment in the woods near Rexton and claims they were
threatened by people yelling over a megaphone: "This is the last face
you will see" and "Your family will hate you because you won't come
home."

SWN Resources says an expensive piece of drilling equipment was also
"burned to the ground" and is seeking damages including lost profits,
interest and the company's legal costs.

Requests for comment from the protesters were not returned. None of
the allegations have been proven in court

New Brunswick Premier David Alward says there were plenty of meetings
between his government, the company and the Elsipogtog First Nation
before things boiled over with violent protests earlier this month.

"There's been significant consultation that has taken place...that's
work that we will continue to do to build relationships," Alward told
reporters in Ottawa.

Alward added he suspects the recent violence in Rexton was sparked by
interlopers and not locals.

Mr. Amos,

I listened to you for quite a while on the phone, and then when I
asked you to further explain something you declined. I'm very busy
covering the story in Rexton with limited resources, so have not had
any available time to look through your documents, even if there is
something worthwhile in them. If you have any information regarding
Mr. Harrison directly and his involvement with the events of Oct.

I also must say, I find many of the terms you use to be very
derogatory, especially towards First Nations Peoples, and would ask
you to reconsider their use when writing me. Thank you in advance.

Important Info: Forestry Protection Presentations on Clearcutting and Spraying

These presentations were made at the Peace & Friendship Alliance Meeting
in Rogersville, June 11, 2016. To become acquainted with the Alliance,
please ask to join our closed Facebook page of the same name.

Caution: these notes are not verbatim. They are based on memory. In places, additional supporting information is included, to assist people getting active on forestry issues.

Yesterday, more than 60 residents from communities and groups in all four directions in New Brunswick gathered in Rogersville. Thanks to Le Buck Stop hunting club owner Gerry Vautour for the use his space, and to Gerry Leblanc for the beautiful signs and Leo Goguen for the artist’s materials.

It was the monthly gathering of the Peace and Friendship Alliance (P&FA), which moves around the province. The P&FA brings together Mi’kmaq, Maliseet, Acadian, Anglo, and Newcomer New Brunswickers, to protect the natural environment that sustains all life on this planet.

12662461_459506297576304_2396802875873503967_n

This meeting was jointly hosted by the Kent County Chapter of the Council of Canadians and the Rogersville Lumberjacks, with support from Kopit Lodge at Elsipogtog. All four New Brunswick chapters of the Council of Canadians were present, as were many other groups and individuals, especially concerned woodsmen from the Rogersville area. Both Kopit Lodge and Maliseet (Wolastoq) Grand Council were also represented.

Rogersville is a community where the forest is close to everyone’s heart. Throughout the day, there were six reports on our special theme: protecting the the natural indigenous Acadian forest life from clearcutting and the use of poisonous herbicides.

Kenneth Francis, Speaker for Kopit Lodge/Elsipogtog First Nation (EFN)

DSCN2795

This meeting was held in Mi’kma’ki, so the first presentation was from Elder Kenneth Francis of Kopit Lodge. “Kopit” means beaver, and is the animal that represents the Lodge because of its concern for the water. Kopit Lodge is the grassroots community organization mandated by Chief and Council to represent EFN in strategic and official consultations on natural resource issues.

Kenneth opened his presentation speaking about the Wabanaki People, who are of several different nations. All of Mi’kma’ki is part of this: seven distinct districts that traditionally extend from what is now the centre of New Brunswick to the north in Gaspe (Gespe’ke) to the east in Cape Breton (Unama’kik). All must be united in this Peace & Friendship Alliance, based on the treaty of the same name.

Kenneth spoke of two important things he has learned from his teachers. If you can speak your truth in a group, and people hear what you have to say, and you leave the room with the same number of allies you had when you entered, you did well. If you increased your alliances, you did very well.

As well, he remembered an historical tale about settlers discussing what the Mi’kmaq were like. One remarked to the other that, in the woods, they were part of nature, they were not separable from nature, it was all one sphere of life together. Kenneth said that is why they are preparing themselves for taking their issues into court.

Of greatest concern to Kopit and EFN is the poor way that the province is caretaking the environment, especially the devastation of clearcutting and spraying in the forest. For more than a year, Kenneth said, “We have been trying to get the provincial government to come to the table and consult with us on these issues. They keep ignoring us so we have to go the next step.” Recently Kopit/EFN served notice to the provincial government that they intend to file a claim for Aboriginal Title, to protect the environment for future generations.

Ken stressed that Kopit expects a dramatic increase in anti-Indigenous backlash, aimed at alienating non-Native allies from this strategic move. He provided some examples of what he has already started to see and what he thinks is coming. With a thank you to those present who have already expressed their support, Kenneth said Kopit has prepared some notes on what could be included in letters that non-Native environmentalists might choose to write to support the Kopit/EFN IMW (Protecting the Earth for Future Generations) legal strategy. (These guidelines are attached below.)

Leo Goguen, a lifelong outdoorsman and lumberjack from Rogersville NB

DSCN2825.JPG

Leo is also the Board Member representing Rogersville and Acadieville at the South East New Brunswick (SENB) Wood Marketing Board. He spoke about what he has seen in the forest since he was a boy. Leo brought in samples of branches from a local chopping that has been sprayed three times in recent years to suppress the natural forest. It is clear that patch of forest is determined to survive! Despite reports that have been widely circulated about how the animals will not eat the poisoned plants, Leo saw nine moose eating from this chopping last winter. Many local people hunt moose. One local hunter took a moose from this chopping, because the government says it is safe, and fed his five kids on it last winter.

Leo emphasized the extent to which private woodlot owners have been so marginalized in the industry, because they are unable to sell their wood at even break-even prices, thanks to provincial-corporate lumber agreements and also the lack of regulatory enforcement.

With equal amounts of irony and frustration, Leo said that privately-held woodlots have become by default the only protected forest areas in the province, because of how the 2014 Forest Management Agreement has cut protected areas to almost nothing and the fact that woodlot owners cannot afford to cut their woods for the corporate-owned mills.

Finally, he mentioned that NB Power, a provincial agency, uses herbicide sprays on their lines, and sometimes on older lines they may have neglected to get any consent from landowners. If anyone has a power line running through their property, you can call Rick Doucet at NB Power and ask to have your portion of the line put on their “No Spray” list: 506-470-8748. You need to provide NB Power with your Service New Brunswick PID number to get on this list.

Spasaqsit Possesom (Ron Tremblay), Grand Chief of the Wolastoq (Maliseet) Grand Council, agreed with Leo that putting pressure on NB Power is important. The Grand Council is seeking a meeting with NB Power to talk about their use of herbicide sprays.

Marcel Maillet, General Manager of the SENB Marketing Board

Before introducing Marcel, Leo told of an SENB meeting where the 120+- members present were asked by someone to stand if they opposed herbicide spraying on the forest. As far as Leo could see, everyone stood up. Marcel Maillet’s presentation confirmed that the South-East NB Marketing Board members are against the spraying.

Marcel introduced himself as coming from four generations of woodlot owenership, in Kent and Westmoreland counties, and he has 35 years of experience working in forestry. He said, “My father taught me to always respect the land and only take what you need… I don’t believe in using pesticides on forests. A forest is more than a tree farm.”

13445390_10154296370247139_7030627364899175080_n

Marcel tore apart the government and industry messaging that it is more financially economical to use spray “silviculture” than the old-style manual silviculture thinning.

After a chopping is cut, it is sprayed: this is called “seed spray.” A year or two later, when the soil has settled from the upheaval of clear-cut harvesting, the infant spruce trees are planted in the chopping. The area will be sprayed again late that summer or in early fall. After that it will be sprayed at least once more, sometimes 2 or 3 additional times. This is done to reduce the competition from the indigenous mixed Acadian forest fauna, many of whom grow much more quickly than the planted softwood trees. (The original forest plants and trees often come up from roots left in the soil.)

Each time a clear-cut acre is sprayed it costs between $300 and $400 (let’s say an average of $350/acre). Therefore – at a bare minimum– it costs at least $1050 to do spray silvaculture on a one-acre chopping if only three sprays are needed: a seed spray, a spray right after planting, and one more. But remember, often more are required.  Our maple trees are the hardest to kill.

By contrast, manual silviculture by thinning costs about $300 per acre. It is most likely only needed twice, maybe 3 times, on a softwood plantation. It is less expensive and it makes jobs. A question was asked if there would be people to work these jobs, because industry/government suggest there are not. Both Leo and Marcel believe there would be silvaculturalists ready and happy to work. Not using the sprays eliminates the health impacts for humans and other life in the forest, means that nearby woodlots or fields will not be harmed by air-borne spray, and reduces the carbon-based environmental impact footprint on that area. If done in a mixed forest, to strengthen it, manual silvaculture thinning keeps the original forest intact making it more resilient to climatic and pest challenges. In the current market, hardwoods can be more profitable to harvest.

The system we have now of using sprays for plantation silviculture only works because it is subsidized by the taxpayer through agreements between the lumbering corporations and the provincial government.

Comments from participants included: the true cost of the silviculture program should include health costs and flood costs as a result of clearcuts; and, Spruce Budworm spraying was stopped in NB because of the Migratory Bird Protection Act– NB  does not have strong legislation to protect the public, but strong legislation still exists under the Migratory Bird Act.

ECOvie from Restigouche Ouest

Next up were Francine Levesque and Jean MacDonald from ECOvie, a group from the Restigouche Ouest region of our province. Over 3,000 of the signatures on the petition against spraying that was filed with the NB Legislature came from their rural, sparsely settled area. Many people in that area have personal experiences with the wreckage and misery caused by clear-cutting and spraying.

Maple syrup production is currently a growing and employment-generating non-corporate natural industry in the area, and the maple products producers are set against the spraying. The hardwood mill in their region is a very well-respected local employer and more jobs like that would be a benefit to the area.

 2016-05-19.jpg

ECOvie invited allies from around the province to support their plans to make more people aware exactly how clear-cutting and softwood plantation practices rely on the sprays, and of the need to stop the spraying. More will be announced about their plans as the spraying season approaches.

On August 27, the Peace and Friendship Alliance will meet in the Kedgwick area. Trailers and tents are welcome, if people want to come up the night before so they do not have such a long drive on the morning of the meeting.

Frank Johnston, Southeast Chapter of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick

Frank is also a member of the provincial CCNB Board of Director’s Executive Committee. He presented a powerpoint show on loss of forest cover in the province since 2001, entitled, Forest Cover Loss in NB : A Process of Liquidation. It is a strong piece of scientifically assembled video research. Even better, it is available for groups and communities across the province to borrow, with or without Frank, because it has speaker notes embedded in it.

Between 2001 and 2012, New Brunswickers lost 1.7 times more of our public forest than has been replanted into the problematic industrial softwood tree plantations. It has not gotten better. Anyone living in or near the forest knows that the losses have gotten worse under the 2014 Forest Management Agreement signed by the Government of New Brunswick with JDI of the Irving group of companies, and now ratified by other major lumber corporations in the province.

It is clear that we are losing good, indigenous mixed forest at a much greater rate than it is being replaced.

The replanting is of only one species, which will not be climate change adaptable. Both the type of tree and the fact that it is monoculture makes our woods more susceptible to pest infestations which kill the trees and add to wildfire risks.

Screenshot from 2016-06-13 10:40:00

Flooding is also a clear-cut side-effect, as we saw in Sussex area recently.

In another few weeks, Frank will be able to harness and start crunching the annual satellite-based data release from the University of Maryland on tree cover loss. Then he will be able to report on what the loss and replacement of tree cover looked like in 2015. It will be worse than previous years, based on anecdotal and photo evidence from around the province. But, it seems that in 2013, “a single clear cut above Thompson Road, South Branch” in Kings County, “369 contiguous hectares were cut even though 60 – 70 hectare cuts were the then current DNR guideline standard.” The majority of this cutting was on Crown Land License #6, held by JDI of the Irving group of companies (the minor part was adjacent freehold of unknown ownership). Likely, it was all cut for JDI by JDI’s subcontractors.

Frank concluded his talk saying that the management of Crown Land should return to the province, and that a vigorous program of “afforestation must replace the current policy of liquidation.”

There was discussion around his proposal for a “return to” management by the “province”. First, this offers no substantial protection for the environment based on how governments of different political parties all seem equally captured by the lumbering corporations whims. Secondly, the province does not have title to these lands: they have never been surrendered and have continuously been used for traditional uses by the original Indigenous Peoples. From an Indigenous rights perspective, especially now that Canada has fully agreed to uphold the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Mi’kmaq and the Wolastoq must be centrally involved in the management of the public forests. However, everyone agreed a new management regime is required and that an aggressive program of reforestration with mixed Acadian forest fauna is required, especially those plants that will be adaptable to climate changes.

Everyone was extremely appreciative of Frank’s work and presentation. Contact Frank c/o Tracy Glynn, Forestry staffer at CCNB, at forest@conservationcouncil.ca

Stop Spraying New Brunswick (SSNB) Facebook Page

Caroline Lubbe-Darcy presented this report. With the NB hunters and outdoors enthusiasts coming on board, support to end spraying in the forests has grown a lot. Doctors are also getting involved.

11140029_10153323672566365_9114381791770508962_n

At the rally on May 18, 2016 at the New Brunswick Legislature, a petition to stop spraying signed by almost 13,000 New Brunswickers was given to two MLA’s – David Coon and Gilles Lepage – who filed the petitions on behalf of  SSNB. David Coon raised this matter in the Legislature and Coon has circulated the response of then Minister of Natural Resources Denis Landry to this petition. As Landry is no longer Minister for this department, SSNB is going to follow up with the new Minister of Natural Resources. Everyone is asked to push for many more signed petitions for the next filing date: the deadline for getting these to SSNB is September 10th.

Caroline also reminded people to let NB Power know if you do not want them to spray herbicides on hydro line that is on your property. The info on this is on the SSNB FB page, where one can also find reports about glyphosate and other herbicides, and see photos of clear cuts and the damage being done to our forests. People are reminded to film or photograph clear cut areas, using gps tracking information if possible, and upload these visuals to the SSNB page.

SSNB volunteers are working on information sheets on the impacts of herbicide sprays. There was some discussion on this, with general agreement that public information is essential but many people feeling short videos are more effective. Caroline emphasized that the info sheets they envisage will be brief as most people do not have a lot of time for in-depth reading. There was also discussion of using consumer pressure on the companies that use the sprays.

An exciting development that will be very helpful is the beginning of a Spray Caucus through the New Brunswick Environment Network (NBEN). NBEN has helped many other grassroots environmental movements to network through regularly-scheduled caucus teleconferences. Both the Fredericton and the Kent County chapters of the Council of Canadians are members of NBEN and took part in the first discussion to set up this teleconference network.

Only organizations (not individuals) can take part in these “phone meetings’ – either groups that belong to the NBEN, or those who are nominated by a member group to join the caucus, who then become associate members. So, now is the time to form your own little group with concerned friends and neighbours – it is easier to get things done with a group, and you could consider joining this new caucus!

Brainstorming Where to Next, To Stop Spraying?

After these presentations concluded, there was an open “brainstorming” discussion. Details from that are not being shared in this document. Many of the ideas were in preliminary stages and need more planning and networking to be fully developed. In general, some points made included: showing how much we value our forests by being in them in a good way; increasing public education including finding places for Frank to present his presentation, and also use of short videos; developing consumer pressure strategies; developing more diverse tactical strategies for getting changes in provincial policies; focusing on climate action issues.

Mark D’Arcy remarked, “I hope there is such a multitude of events on this issue in the next few months that none of us can keep track of them.”

All four New Brunswick Council of Canadians chapters Present and Accounted For!

Main Points for letters of support re Kopit/EFN aboriginal title claim,
which are to make clear that allies support this legal action:

  1. acknowledge the ongoing injustices endured by Mi’kmaq People, all of which have been done to steal the land and resources from the People, so the title and rights of the People must be affirmed by the courts
  2. recognize that Canadian laws and governments cannot adequately protect the regional natural environment, presently the only hope for protection of the natural environment is through assertion of Aboriginal title, which will result in the Mi’kmaq people being in a caretaking position for the region’s resources, lands, waters, and air
  3. undo the corporate capture of New Brunswick and help promote genuine democracy in this region, where all people have a say in matters that pertain to and govern their everyday lives

Is Miles Howe a RCMP Rat?

Is Halifax "media co-op""reporter a real journalist or a
propagandist, or perhaps a RCMP rat? Injin "war chief" John Levi is in
jail tonight, no doubt some inmate's "fuck buddy." Yet ersatz
journalist Miles Howe who claims to be with "big chief" John Levi was
not charged.

No one actually reads or takes seriously the Halifax media co-op
because it is not "media," but merely the shill for "activist causes",
NGO's, and social agencies, in short a propaganda organ, akin to
Isvestia or Pravda. Here in Alberta the "media co-op," doesn't exist,
I wonder why?

"By their fruits ye shall know them." Elsipogtog "war chief," and the
minute number of Indian "activists" have assaulted innocent work
crews, burned seismic vehicles, sawed old growth trees to block
roads, blockaded public thoroughfares, and have committee other
violent, criminal, and legally defined terrorist acts. And these
Indian animals try to pass all this off as "peaceful protest," or
"cultural rituals."

Preston Manning said many years ago, "if you turn on porch light, you
will no doubt attract some bugs. Very few if any decent, or white
people are attending these "native protests."

But there is always an exception. Social welfare parasite, emotionally
disturbed convicted criminal and self described "journalist" Charles
Leblanc will, as he says; "will be there." Charles Leblanc "will be
there" at the "protests in Kent County this Saturday morning. He will
be there not because of any great "journalist" type motives, but
merely because there will be a free "pot luck lunch" served. Whenever
there is a "free lunch," involved you can count on our "citizen
journalist," and self described "activist" Charles Leblanc elbowing
everyone to get at the free food. "Potlucks" are where everyone
contributes to dinner of lunch. You can count on Charles Leblanc to
contribute absolutely nothing, as he is wont to do his entire misspent
life. Even his parents had to ban him from the family home, because
Charles was still mooching off them in his twenties.

Again, "by their fruits ye shall know them." Many of our so called
"peaceful protesters have extensive criminal records, are addicts
indulging their addictions around the "sacred fire" in the "sacred
camp," and drinking "sacred firewater."

None of these "native warriors," or "peacekeepers' or concerned about
Mother Earth are educated, employed, or are in manner successful
individuals. Their goal is to prevent jobs, employment, success,
enhance education of children and an escape from that New Brunswick
"cultural" traditions....pogey and equalization.

These animals and folks like Charles Leblanc do NOT care about "Mother
Earth," as much as they care about being fat, idle, ignorant and on
the dole.

So today, whilst Miles Howe, Charles Leblanc and the rest of the
little Indian boys, and squaws dine heartily on food purchase by
social welfare...consider this? Who are the rats amongst you? So
Wendall Nicholas, how does the new "peacekeeper T shirt fit? Be
careful not to slop firewater on it!

Pocohontas Amy Sock, baby! How about a nice half and half for thirty
bucks? That would make "mother Earth" really happy, if not clapped and
dosed up

After watching the circus unfold for a couple of weeks and reading
what the lawyer Amy Sock had to say I figured that it was High Time to

Lewis did not have the faintest notion as to who I was? To be fair I
never heard of either of them until this month. However a simple search
on the Internet will easily prove that most of their purported enemies and
many of their supposed pals have known exactly who I am for many years.
More importantlyy he has had many people around him lately who have
been recieving the same emails as the RCMP. Top of the list would be the
NDP, David Coon's Green Meanies, the Council of Canadians, the Sierra
Club and of course Chucky Leblanc and his media pals in the the CBC CTV
and the IRVING crowd.

While waiting for a call back from John Levi I pasted together a
couple of important emails I sent to John Warr beginning late last
year hen I learned he in charge of the jurisdiction where I was born
and raised and ran for a seat in Parliament while I was a friend and
supporter of the nasty Newfy Byron Prior. Just like Chucky Leblanc,
Barry Bachrach, Werner Bock, Mary Ann Hennen, Alex Hunter and
several other the Newfy Byron Prior stabbed me in the back after he
thought he made a deal to his advantage with some corrupt politicians.
Seems that people never learn that cops, lawyers, politicians, bankers,
bureaucrats and priests talk of ethical conduct but they are in fact
the last people to be trusted.

It has been a couple of hours since I called John Levi. He told me he
was in a meeting with a bunch of his supporters and that he would call
me back. I suggested that he mention my name to his friends and see
if any of them admitted to knowing of me. Almost instantly I noticed two
hits to the most relevant blog about John Levi's doings. Methinks there
are no coincidences. I will not bother him anymore and merely give him
the benefit of my doubts. I truly hope that Levi calls me back. However
I am not betting on it. People so seldom do.

Whether John Levi ever calls me back or not at least like old Billy
Lewis and the nasty Roger Augustine he now knows that I exist and
that amongst our common foes today are two cops from the "Rock"
John Warr and his boss Roger Brown. A funny part of our converstion
to me was that John Levi said he knew who Leonard Peltier was but
did not know Billy Lewis. Levi's answer was he was new to this stuff?
Yet Billy Lewis claimed he was at the sacred fire in New Brunswick very
recently. Perhaps Levi did not understand me I don't know. I do know for
sure Billy Lewis never called me back and Angela Giles suddenly took a
vacation. Go Figure. These are just some of their many words that I have
read. I bet these people must have read a few of mine sent directly to
them after calling them as well.

http://canadians.org/media/water/2013/14-Jun-13.html

"Where is the media?" asks Angela Giles, Atlantic regional organizer
with the Council of Canadians. "And how is this democracy? The New
Brunswick government has not been given the mandate to move ahead with
shale gas development. The RCMP are paid with public money and then
are assigned to protect private interests over the interests of the
people... This is not right."

Billy Lewis, Mi'kmaq elder, also visited and prayed at the Sacred Fire
in Elsipogtog yesterday. "This is Indigenous land and there is a duty
to consult Mi'kmaq and Maliseet, and they weren't consulted. These
actions affect the land, the treaties and all of us."

Perhaps the RCMP and anyone else who understands that politicians and
lawyers are monumental liars and is truly interested in justice should
scrolll down

Clearly on May 31st of this year I reminded the two Newfy RCMP bosses that I
knew they were they were in my old stomping grounds and I was paying
attention as I remindded them about my dongs with their old buddy Byron
Prior.

You can bet I made many calls and sent many emails before and after thirty
some people have needlessly gotten themselves arrested..I suspected that
John
Warr is the unamed boss in the Irish Town Community Hall. At least no
corrupt
cop has denied it yet. Trust that the RCMP and legions of others in many
countries know my issues with public corruption, the RCMP, banksters and
the Greasey Gassy Oily guys go way back in time. The RCMP attacked me
LONG before John Levi and his little band of fellow "native warriors"
decided to
seize a Stantec truck that is used in SWN Resources' shale gas work . At
first I
thought it comical that John Levi wold pick a fight like that then allow the
local RCMP to take the truck and park it at their local cop shop so they
could surround it there. However who am I to judge? Nobody has the balls to
even say my name. Levi's actions did make the National News byway of a
little Pow Wow with the other questionable CROWN Corp known as the CBC
and the very next day they had quite a sizable fan club..On the otherhand I
have
no fans at all who are willing admit in public that I even exist. Yet there
are lots of evil trolls on the Internet who are more that willing to
harrass slander and threaten my family and I for the benefit of the RCMP and
their political puppetmasters and their corporate sponsors etc. Of that I
have
no doubt.

If the RCMP would harass litterly hundreds of their own members and even
kill citizens that they puportedly serve and protect why it is unbelievable
to
think they would attack a whistleblower trying hard to expose their many
wrongs?

If you doubt me ask John Warr and Roger Brown about Byron Prior and I and
laugh as watch the play dumb or run away from you. FYI What I was trying
to telll John Levi on the phone is that all any anti fracking protester has
to do
to make the CROWN stay the charges against them is to simply serve some of
my documents on the RCMP. I was telling many others to watch Werner Bock
and his UFO arguments with the CROWN this week. I suspect that pigheaded
old farmer and newborn Nazi supporter would rather lose his farm than admit
I
was correct about Byron Prior and their many political friends. Where will
his
pals be if Bock gets his nasty arse locked up as nut just like it has
happened
twice before?

Trust that I will never come to his defense again but I may sue the CROWN
about
my cattle. Section 444 is stilll on the books CORRECT?

Anyway all of this political bullsit about natural resources reminds me of
the actions of AIM and the FBI in Pine Ridge back in the 1970s. Many people
wound up MURDERED including a AN ETHICAL Mic Mac lady and now at least one
of her daughters is a member of the RCMP. Go figure why I wonder what Anna
Mae's daughter thinks as her fellow cops attack her Mother's people in our
Native Land instead of the US of A EH?

Politically speaking Harper and everybody else want to forget what I said
about NaTural Gas, Natural Resources and NAFTA etc when I ran for Parliament
in the the area in 2004.

Perhaps the RCMP should study a LOTof documents and perpare to argue me
while ordinary folks review an IRVING News Rag trying to make fun of my
concerns in 2004 N'esy Pas?

Hello Lisa,

David Amos asked me to contact you. I met him last June after he became
an independent (not representing any political party) candidate in our
federal
election that was held June 28. He was a candidate in our constituency of
Fundy (now called Fundy-Royal).

I wrote a profile story about him, as I did all other candidates. That
story appeared in the Kings County Record June 22. A second story, written
by one of my reporters, appeared on the same date, which was a report on
the candidates' debate held June 18.

As I recall David Amos came last of four candidates in the election.
The winner got 14,997 votes, while Amos got 358.

I have attached the two stories that appeared, as well as a photo
taken by reporter Erin Hatfield during the debate. I couldn't find the photo
that ran, but this one is very similar.

Raising a Little Hell- Lively Debate Provokes Crowd

By Erin Hatfield

"If you don't like what you got, why don't you change it? If your
world is all screwed up, rearrange it."

The 1979 Trooper song Raise a Little Hell blared on the speakers at
the 8th Hussars Sports Center Friday evening as people filed in to
watch the Fundy candidates debate the issues. It was an accurate, if
unofficial, theme song for the debate.

The crowd of over 200 spectators was dwarfed by the huge arena, but as
they chose their seats, it was clear the battle lines were drawn.
Supporters of Conservative candidate Rob Moore naturally took the blue
chairs on the right of the rink floor while John Herron's Liberalswent
left. There were splashes of orange, supporters of NDP Pat Hanratty,
mixed throughout. Perhaps the loudest applause came from a row towards
the back, where supporters of independent candidate David Amos sat."

favourite possessions--motorcycles.

The Unconventional Candidate

David Amos Isn't Campaigning For Your Vote, But....

By Gisele McKnight

FUNDY--He has a pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket, a chain on his
wallet, a beard at least a foot long, 60 motorcycles and a cell phone
that rings to the tune of "Yankee Doodle."

"Amos has no intention of actively campaigning.

"I didn't appreciate it when they (politicians) pounded on my door
interrupting my dinner," he said. "If people are interested, they can
call me. I'm not going to drive my opinions down their throats."

And he has no campaign budget, nor does he want one.

"I won't take any donations," he said. "Just try to give me some. It's
not about money. It goes against what I'm fighting about."

What he's fighting for is the discussion of issues - tainted blood,
the exploitation of the Maritimes' gas and oil reserves and NAFTA, to
name a few.

"The political issues in the Maritimes involve the three Fs - fishing,
farming and forestry, but they forget foreign issues," he said. "I'm
death on NAFTA, the back room deals and free trade. I say chuck it
(NAFTA) out the window.

NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement which allows an
easier flow of goods between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Amos disagrees with the idea that a vote for him is a wasted vote.

"There are no wasted votes," he said. "I want people like me,
especially young people, to pay attention and exercise their right.
Don't necessarily vote for me, but vote."
